Juicy Burger
375 South Bascom Avenue
San Jose CA 95128

Executive Summary: High quality burgers, limited menu, expensive;
worth it.

A reduced Clan Ranger visited Juicy Burger on Bascom Avenue (near
San Carlos and the Pink Poodle) yesterday for a late lunch. I'd
driven past it recently and wanted to give it a try. A whitepages
look shows there is another, Blossom Hill.

Juicy Burger is a fast food joint, from its Spartan-esque interior
to the standard ordering area. The difference is in the
build-a-burger condiment bar. You get to decide just what
vegetables you're going to add to your burger and how much.

I ordered the Super Juicy Burger (two patties, 1/2-lb.), a side of
fried zucchini, and a medium Coke. SWMBO ordered the Mushroom
Burger, fries, and a Coke. Spawn ordered a Juicy Hot Dog, fries
and a vanilla shake.

Burgers and hot dog were grilled to perfection. I liked the
condiment bar and the vegetables were FRESH! Crisp lettuce,
non-weeping onion slices, sliced jalapenos and pepprocinis, salsa
fresco, etc. It was great. Spawn pronounce her hot dog delicious
and wouldn't allow any snackers a single bite.

Beware the fries. Hot, crispy, enormous... A meal unto itself.

Downside: It ain't cheap. For the three of us, it cost a whopping
US$31.00. (And they only accept cash, no debit or credit cards.)

I'll go back to try other items, now that I know about portions,
it'll be less shocking. By the time we'd finished our lunch, the
place was hopping!

If you're looking for a good burger, given 'em a try. Juicy
Burger's right up there with Kirk's as one of the best in the San
Jose area.

There is ( or was one ) on ECR in Santa Clara just a tad south of
Di Cicco's on the same side.

There's also one, I believe, on North First near the old City Hall.

$10 for a burger, fries, and soda isn't cheap, but it also doesn't
strike me as a "whopping" sort of price. And, no, this isn't Timmay-
bait.

And there's also one on Blossom Hill Rd, a few blocks west of the Hwy
85 exit, in the strip mall, across from the Outback.

Does Kirk's and/or Clarke's do one 1/2 patty or two 1/4 patties to
make their 1/2 lb. burger?

It seems one patty would be better than two.

For whom?

One patty is better for the customer. Two patties cook much quicker and
so enhance turnover.

Better to eat, quality-wise.

Kirk's does one patty for their 1/2-lbers but they often closely
resemble steroid-enhanced meatballs, not patties in the
conventional sense.

As I mentioned prior, the burgers were delicious and I plan on
going back again with the full clan and some friends.

My band rehearses near there, so I've gone there once in a while. I
pretty much agree with the assessment, with the caveat that, yeah, the
portions are too big for me.

Any other good eats near Bascom and Stevens Creek? I prefer La
Gaviota to Tacos Al Pastor for Mexican, don't like Mt. Mike any more
since they forgot to put my pizza in the oven at all, and love
Felafel's Drive In when it's warm enough to eat outside.

Me too. Isn't there a decent Korean place nearby? (I haven't tried
it but I vaguely recall some past recommendation.)

Did Mt. Mike actually serve you the pizza unbaked? That would be an
awesome follow-through to the mistake.

I'm pretty fond of the Korean place across the street from Falafel,
enough that I've never actually made it into Falafel. Much more spendy,
however.

You should try to make it into Felafel Drive-In.

I've watched the little girls who helped out there in the early 80s
become the mainstays. (I don't know who's who, but I think the little
girls became the teenaged servers then the twentysomethings and now the
thirtysomethings).

Excellent felafels.

It's Felafel's Drive-In (right on the sign).
One of the top 3 or 4 dives in the South Bay.
Outstanding Felafel, Gyro, Baba ganoush, Tahini.

Their spiced Pita chips are one of their signature
snacks.

Finally, if you are a connoisseur of Onion Rings,
they have some of the best anywhere.

Outside tables can be hard to get at lunch on
nice days, but if you're patient, you can get
one in reasonable time.

No, they just forgot to build it. About 20 minutes before the
rehearsal was due to start, when I still had time to scarf it down, I
asked where it was, and they confessed. Offered to make it now, but
there wasn't enough time so I got a refund for the pizza, paid for the
beer I actually drank, and went off hungry. Never again.

THey are very fine, but oddly, frozen. Still, they come out tasty so
who cares?

Pho Lynn is pretty good; it's three or four blocks east on San Carlos.
Your usual pho/bun/riceplate place, better than most. On the other side
of San Carlos is a Lebanese-pastry place with lamajun and the like.
There aren't any destination restaurants I can think of in the area.

Oh, maybe a half mile down San Carlos is Becky's, a Mexican/Salvadorean
place that has good pupusa.

One thing for sure, the Juicy Burger folks sure picked a perfect name
for their restaurant.
