Forgot to post this earlier: an outpost of Top Dog has opened in San
Jose on 11th by E. San Carlos...

<http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/7649995.htm>

I guess it makes sense for them to be down by the University, but I
would have much preferred a location near the bars.

So I wonder what this does for Chi-Dog's owner's plans of maybe
opening a reincarnation of his place in BDSJ...

Top Dog is known for its sausages as much as for its dogs. It's not in
any particular style - you get a grilled dog or sausage on a bun, and
they have plenty of condiments. I used to order the calabrese when I was
a student at Cal.

Top Dog was founded by a dyed-in-the-wool libertarian. The two original
locations in Berkeley have dozens of anti-government articles on the
walls (by "anti-government" I mean against the idea of government, not
against the U.S. government). It makes for amusing reading. According to
the article in the Mercury, the new branch is a franchise, so it isn't
likely to have the political wallpaper.

They serve a "Calabrese" for an Italian dog, but it is pork
not beef and it is not an emulsified sausage.

Jeff has forgotten perhaps that there were THREE original locations in
Berkeley -- Hearst near Euclid, south campus, and Shattuck at
University. The last burned down in the early 1970s, and its part of
town becomes unrecognizeable reworked every few years anyway.

During high school my friends and I used to get Dogs at the erstwhile
Shattuck Top Dog and jam the bar TV with a pocket jammer until the
server rotated the knob to something interesting (i.e., other than
_Gilligan's Island_). That was in 1969-70. A sort of ad-hoc,
indirect remote control, and the start, I should add, of a productive
career. (Shortly after that I qualified for a senior professional
license from the FCC whose terms were such that further jamming would
have obliged me to arrest myself.)

Was Top Dog the local chain with the big ol' weiner dog head in a chef's
hat?

Hell, I've been arresting myself for years.

No, that was Doggie Diner.

I think there's one last remaining Doggie Diner head in San Francisco
over by the zoo. I think one or two survive over in the East Bay...

They close at 9:00 p.m.. The ones at Berkeley don't even get busy
until after midnight.

Actually there are a whole bunch of them. They have reunions sometimes.

I saw a couple of 'em last summer in Albuquerque, NM. They were inside a
touring, hippy-style bus.

I saw some, too. I took these pictures a couple years ago:

Yo! I'm around, but not much availabel bandwidth for USENET these
days, especially when ba.food turned into a 500 article a day group!

I've done the Top Dog, though, it's in my 'hood. It's in a location
that's our own doomed restaurant spot, though, so I'm hoping it hangs
on for a while. Previously it was Tacos Acapulco, which lasted a
couple two three years, and before that Jersey Joes, a kind of crappy
Philly Cheese Steak place.
