When I was a teenager, we'd call Arby's, "Barfy's." That pejorative
was reinforced in later years when their roast beef sandwiches became
worse, which I hadn't thought possible. Thus, I often forget that
their Market Fresh Sandwiches(TM), of more recent times, aren't bad.

Yesterday, I had their Reuben. Of course, I wasn't expecting, nor did
they serve me, a Reuben of the quality of a good Jewish Deli a la
Langers in LaLaLand. The sandwich however, tasted better than those
found in the run-of-the-mill BA delis. It was filling as well.

Another plus, is that Arby's has horseradish sauce. It, however, lacks
the punch of a good horseradish sauce. Though, considering other drive-
thrus are void of any type of horseradish, I appreciated that nice
touch. Indeed, I often find that most BA delis don't have horseradish
for sandwiches.

Many people, including myself, often ask: "When is somebody going to
open a drive-thru deli?" Well, until somebody does, when I desire to
remain in the comfort of my car, I will remind myself of Arby's drive-
thru deli sandwiches.

Reminds me of one of mine: "Yoshinoya Barf Bowl."

Where is there a drive through Arbys? Actually, the only Arby's I can
think of is in SSF. Arby's is ok. They have some different stuff.

Actually, I just answered my own question by going to their web page.

I now recall eating at one down in SJ, or somewhere down there.
Everything south of Palo Alto is a blur.

I just almost never go down that way. There was one in Menlo Park, not
a drive through, but it closed and is now a fish place, I think.

The Fish Market is still in the building next to the ex-Arby's,
where it has been for time immemorial (i.e., since I moved here).
They are, however, using what used to be the Arby's sign.

Don't post at this hour of the morning, Gary. You're not awake,
yet.

Cook's Seafood, not The Fish Market. Duh.

The most recent ones I went to, Pleasanton and Fairfield, are drive-
thrus. In fact, upon reflection, most, if not all, of the ones I've
gone to have been drive-thrus.

In the 90's there was one on Market St. in SF. I went once and the
only resemblance to the Arby's of years ago was the name.

The sign has, for over a year, indicated that Cook's was opening something
in the old Arby's building. Nothing obvious has happened yet. The last
time I asked about this at Cook's, I didn't get a useful answer (but
perhaps the employee I asked simply didn't know).

Doesn't the one on El Camino (at Bernardo?) in Sunnyvale
have a drive-up window? Maybe I'm thinking of the Burger
King nearby.

Yes, the Arby's at El Camino Real and Bernardo in Sunnyvale has a
drive-up window, and a very nice one at that. It's landscaped and has a
very large overhang above the drive-up window to keep the driver inside
of the vehicle dry when it's raining.

(Unfortunately, like most drive-thru's, there's no overhang to protect
the driver when he or she is placing the order by the outdoor menu sign.)

For the first time in my life last weekend I ate at an Arby's near
the intersection of SR-99 and SR-88 just outside of Stockton, to see
what the fuss on this thread was about. I got a regular roast beef
sandwich.

I figured, this would be sufficient to tide me over after a long
day of wine tasting; I was hungry and tired and tipsy and wanted a
little morsel quickly in my belly before crashing into a hotel room
bed.

The sandwich was okay. I almost couldn't finish it though. It
could have done with a bit less saltiness. I did wonder as I was
eating it, how do they slice the beef so paper-thin? That, I
thought, was pretty amazing.

Also, it's a re-formed meat product, innit? See what fun
you can have with some transglutaminase at home!
