I found today that Williams Cutlery, in the Palo Alto Town and Country
center, is closed. This has for as long as I can remember been a very
nice specialty store -- not only a variety of quality cutlery brands,
but a variety of useful things not easily findable elsewhere (not to
mention a decent electric shaver service). The store manager next door
told me they had clsoed about three weeks ago, possibly for rent-related
reasons, and that he understood they were looking for a new place. But
there are no signs, and the old phone number results in a "not-reachable"
message. Does anyone have better information? Or know of any stores like
it on the Peninsula?

Not on the Peninsula, but in San Jose.

The Williams Cutlery branch in San Jose is still open for business:

http://www.yelp.com/biz/williams-cutlery-and-gifts-san-jose

(Note that this branch used to be located in San Jose's Town & Country
Village before it was redeveloped as Santana Row. So it's quite possible
that Williams Cutlery will eventually open up a branch on the Peninsula
again once they find a suitable location with a rent they can afford.)

Thanks. That yelp page has a link to a store web page, which, curiously,
only mentions the one branch. Yet the "products" heading makes it sound
rather similar to the Palo Alto store. I wonder if there was some past
divergence in ownership (an echo of the burrito thread?). This San Jose
place has "and Gifts" in its name, which I don't recall from the Palo
Alto store. Still, probably worth checking out.

I'm not familiar with Wiliams, but if you want a store
carrying every kind of food cutting blade, including butcher
stores, I reccommend Perfect Edge Cutlery in San Mateo.

They even sell used knives that have been re-conditioned.

Plus all sorts of other tools for the professional chef.

i've bought a couple of knives from Columbus Cutlery in North Beach,
but that was two bizbees ago.

If you want to maintain your men's maintenance products, try the
Williams in San Jose, next to the BevMo. Across the parking lot is a
small appliance parts and repair store, in the bowling alley's
storefront.
