Monterey

Cafe Rio (Good View)
Off Hwy 1 at the Rio Del Mar exit - follow the road to the ocean (west)
its across the street from the beach and has a nice view of the cement
ship (which celebrates its 75th anniversary this weekend) - nice setting
good sourdough & salad - grilled and sauted (sacllops) seafood - nicely
presented - good ambiance
La Palapas (Good View)
Seascape - from Santa Cruz: Hwy 1 south to Larkin Valley/San Andreas
exit (also says Seascape exit) - right (west) to Seascape, right at Seascape
follow the road to the end - on your right will be a shopping center -
Palapas is located in the front part of the shopping center with a view
of the ocean - Mexican flavored grilled seafoods with fruit salsas like
guava, etc - most served w/black beans (can request them)
Sanderlings (Great View)
Seascape - from Santa Cruz: Hwy 1 south to Larkin Valley/San Andreas
exit (also says Seascape exit) - right (west) to Seascape, right at Seascape
follow the road to the end - on your left is Seascape Resort & Lodge -
park and go through the lodge entrance - Sanderlings is to your right and
at the back facing the ocean - fish is mainstay here and the chef knows
what to do with it - in addition to wonderful grilled fish with fantastic
sauces, there's items on the daily offerings such as Blackened Angel Hair
Pasta with Smoked Trout - in addition to your basic sourdough, the salad
is more than your everyday run of the mill salad - the soups are delicious
(like the clam chowder) are delicious - Mon-Thu they have specials on their
fish for $9.95 and on Sundays, their refularly priced $21 cioppino is $11.95
- they have a good wine list - good ambiance
Moss Landing Oyster Bar & Restaurant (no view)
In Moss Landing on Hwy 1 - they have a nice raspberry vinegarette salad
dressing that compliments the salad - great hors d'oeuvres/appetizers,
well presented and grilled seafood selections - nice wine list - good
ambiance - cozy
Maloney's Harbor Inn (Good-to-Great View)
on Hwy 1, at the Moss Landing Harbor (by the PG&E plant) - on the
water - just reopened after extensive remodeling - haven't had a chance
to get in there yet but they just received a good review
Outrigger (or is it Windjammer - I'm always calling it by the wrong name)
In Monterey at Cannery Row - the building juts out over the water so you
get a Lanai effect - (Great View) - it is Polynesian in decor but you can
get other types of food - they have nice lunches and dinners without
being overpriced - since they are in Cannery Row you can go in casual but
could also be dressier - good seafood items

I wanted to second this recommendation; a couple months ago I had a really excellent
dinner there. Great food and better service than I've seen in a long time.

Also very good (and I _think_ with the same owners) is the Whaling Station Inn near
Cannery Row. I haven't been there for a long time, though.

We also found it pricey, but in no way worth the price at dinner. The
breakfast was excellent and far better food.

If you are going this far, go a little farther to the Post Ranch Inn and
eat at their restaurant, which has much better food and a lower price tag.
On the other hand, the drive back from the Post Ranch Inn is not something
I would do after wine. The Post Ranch's restaurant has an even better
view than Pacific's Edge.

Closer to Monterey, I would recommend Central 159, which is better, IMHO,
than the places I have eaten on Fisherman's Wharf, all of which seem
more geared to tourists than food lovers. Central 159 may have a Pacific
Grove address.

Been there. It's been a while, and I have never seen a "real"
robata place, so I can't comment on the authenticity.

The food was very good, though.

It's in Carmel.

If you want to try brunch, Delfino's at, oh, it's a nice hotel on
the water, near the Monterey Bay Aquarium, has the brunch of the gods.
It's Sundays, prices range from 19$ to 26$ depending on what type of
champagne you're drinking. You can sit on the patio overlooking the
bay. The food is spectacular and the service first rate. Go hungry, eat
slowly, and don't be in a hurry afterwards!!!

I also like the Moss Landing Inn but, true, there's no view.

On our last trip to Monterey/Carmel we found what we thought
was an EXCELLENT little restaurant. There were six of us
(three couples) and we each ordered different entrees and
desserts which we shared freely with each other. Everything
was delicious. Not one dud. I had the pistachio encrusted
lamb.

The place is called Bradleys and is located on the Coast Guard
pier with a view of the harbor and fishermans' wharf.

Hope you give it a try.

A great place is near Pacific Grove/Montery boarder. On the ocean
(ocean side) of Ocean drive. If I remember correctly, its called
the Bath House.
