Hoffman's in Santa Cruz was apparently transmogrified from a
bakery/breakfast place to a bistro last October as an episode of
"Restaurant: Impossible", Robert Irvine's take on a weekend remake of
failing restaurants. There is usually less owner/family angst on "R:I"
than on the Fox version of "Kitchen Nightmares", although this one has
more than usual. Irvine isn't nearly as acerbic as Ramsay; I don't think
I've ever heard him cuss out an owner or server in a show.

Anyone eat there, before or after?

"Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of
arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to
skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, sidecar in the other, body thoroughly
used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"

I know of it, well, but it's not a place I've entered in it years of existence.

It's been moderately popular with the tourist crowds, but not as
popular as Zachary's. (Which, in my years of living here since 1982 I
also have never been inside of. I just don't see the point of standing
in line outside a place for some eggs and bacon. I did this a few times
with some old girlfriends at a place called "The Broken Yolk," if I
remember the name correctly, and it seemed to mostly a "morning after"
excuse to buy her yet another meal. What's with these "morning after"
yolkeries? The current hot spot in Santa Cruz (County, for the
grammarians here) is the Silver Spur, which often has an hour-long wait
for a simple eggs and sausage breakfrast. I've also never been there.
Part of the benefit of being a local is knowing which places to never
go to.

To add to my previoius post, having never been inside it, it externally
looks like the same kind of place it was before

(Not a place I would want to eat at normally, but maybe a place for
locals to have their in-laws have breakfast at, if you catch my drift.
My treecutter guy said his mother and her boyfriend and he enjoyed a
breakfast there a few months ago. Sort of what Denny's used to be
before it raced to the bottom.)

Breakfast and lunch, but not dinner (which I gather was the purpose of
the makeover.) Their complementary scones were nice at breakfast, and
I liked their cheese blintzes.

I used to order their princess torte as a special occasion cake, and
also would stop by for a croissant or pastry. I admit their makeover
did not target me; I haven't been in since they redid it. (The bakery
section was removed to put in the bar, so I have no idea if there is
still walk-in bakery service.)
