PS Disregard after 7/22.
Harland's in Fig Garden Village.
Ripe Tomato in Fig Garden Village.
The place on West and Bullard (can't remember the name of it
but drive buy its on the southeast corner tucked in the back.)
Bagel Basket - any of them.
Harland's is very $$$.

Also in fig garden village is Appleby's (sp?). Not the best food, but
the sandwhiches are different. I don't remember a Ripe Tomato there. I
do know of a Sweet Tomatoes towards the 99 that isn't bad. Better than
Fresh Choice :)
Also, Cabbages And Kings has great mediterranean food. The lamb kabobs
are pretty tasty.
>Bagel Basket - any of them.
Hmmm...must be new. I don't remember any of these when I was suffering,
er living there. Bagels 'N' Scoops on Wishon has decent bagels and coffee.
If you like Mexican food, there is Mama Luz on Tulare Street downtown
that is pretty awesome and not that expensive either. There is also a
little Mexicatessen on Fulton Street that has weird hours and extremely
limited but delicious menu. Another good little Mexican place
is a tiny taco/burrito joint on Gettysburg and Blackstone by the Fresno
Ag supply...great salsa and everything is freshly made.
For Italian, the DiCicco's restaurants are OK, but they vary in quality
from restaurant to restaurant. The one on Shaw and First was my favorite
and they make AWESOME sauteed mushrooms. In the same shopping center is
a nice little Japanese place that is not very expensive and has a very
nice atmosphere for dining. After lunch and dinner you can hop on over
next door to the Velvet Creamery and enjoy their very fattening desserts :)
There is also a Thai restaurant next to DiCicco's which has really good
Pad Thai and shrimp dishes.
Across the street from FSU behind Kinko's is The Brahma Bull that has
AWESOME North Indian food. Their lunch buffet is plentiful and fresh,
and if you are looking for a change of pace and can tolerate very spicy
food, give this place a try. Very popular with the local Indian
population, students, and faculty. Great prices and portions, too, and
the owners are delightful to talk with.
There is also the La Maison du Cafe on Shaw across from Fresno State
State that has cheap and plentiful desserts and coffee. Their falafel is
decent as well as their other items on the menu. Next to them is the
Pizza Factory which made fabu pizza and calzone, but when I went home
last month to visit family and friends, they were closing that location
down. Damn shame too.
Goomba's is decent but not the best pasta place around. There is one by
FSU and one on Shaw towards the 99. Too yuppie in decor and attitude,
the bread wasn't always fresh, but the garlic fettucine was pretty good.
In the Tower District coffee joints are becoming popular, but the food in
a lot of them leaves something to be desired. The atmosphere can be fun
though, especially on a weekend. There is also Vini Vidi Vinci that is
supposed to have good Italian food, but I never got to try it.
Butterfield's is a micro-brewery and eatery on Olive Avenue, and the
Bridalveil Ale is HIGHLY recommended. Around Xmas time they make a
wonderful cider-type ale.
Places to avoid: China Station. Students' delight though...massive
portions for few $$$. The Marie Callendar's on Shaw and Cedar really
sucks. So does Hometown Buffet towards Clovis. Chile Pepper's across
the street from Marie McCallendar's is popular with the beer guzzling
crowd and the Mexican food is just NOT very good. A Jordanian used to
own the building and called his business The Sultan's, which was also a
little Arab grocery store selling very unusual and hard to find spices
and foods. To this day, I have never had pilaf or falafel as good as
they guy used to make it. The spices were SO strong in that place that
the new owner just could not get rid of it.
These are all the places that I can think of right away. I have to dig
out the business cards to remember the more obscure but delicious places :)

Go there on Friday or Saturday night and plan on being there after 7 pm
when Vicki Zimmer tears up the piano with her magnificent swing style.
She's very friendly, too.
