Second lunch at Mission Chinese in SF today. I liked it better this
time than my first visit, possibly because there were three of us
instead of two, letting us order four dishes instead of three. I still
think they use too much salt (and I like salty food), and I still
think head-banger punk music is not the best accompaniment for a meal,
but the food was fine. Beer-brined Sichuan pickles was like kimchee
with roasted peanuts and oil. Tea-smoked eel was served like a sushi
roll, sliced into six pieces, with a wide noodle wrapped around eel,
celery, sauce. Thrice-cooked bacon was extremely rich; the balance
between the bacon, sliced rice cake, and bitter melon was very nice.
And the salt-cod fried rice was, despite its name, the least salty
dish.
