Less than auspicious debut? Are you referring to the slam Rose's
received in the Chronicle for disorganized service?
I actually like Rose's quite a bit. Have been there a number of times,
and eat lunch there about once a week lately. They've reorganized the
menu since the review came out. I think the food's good, the service is
acceptable, and the outdoor seating is very pleasant.
Two days ago at lunchtime there I thought I saw Reed Hearon slip through
the front of the house, wearing whites. Couldn't be sure, it was just a
glimpse.

I agree - I have been there three times and the food was satisfying -
especially the pasta "en papillote".
But the service was snooty ( not appropriate anywhere - especially at a seat
yourself/order at counter place) and disorganized.
I heard they seat you now and take your order - I will go back but I have never
seen Hearon at Rose's Cafe. I have seen him cooking at the Farmer's Market
stand in the summer - so I thought he would be more hands-on with the Cafe.
Maybe I was a bit harsh- Rose's Cafe is pleasant enough but could be better.
I've always gone for lunch, never for dinner. At lunch you order at the
counter, they give you a number placard for your table, then they bring
the food to the table. This minimal service scheme works fairly well.
I understand that Rose's has full table service at dinner. Perhaps
their full-service mode actually works less well than the modified
self-service at lunch?
