A few years ago, several lemon-flavored products disappeared from the
market simultaneously, never to be seen again. Schweppes Bitter Lemon, a
bitter lemon hard candy imported from England, and the "lemon crystals" at
Ratto's all vanished about the same time. In fact, I seem to recall that
Ratto's issued a recall on the crystals recently sold (at the time).

A recall implies a general safety problem, or that a bad batch got out.
Either problem should be correctable in short order with modern food
chemistry.

Both the Schweppes and the candy were British imports, so maybe there is
some kind a import tarrif thwt effecively locked the stuff out, but how
does that explain a recall?

Does anyone know *why* these products were withdrawn?

Shortly after I moved to California in 1992, I went looking for
this magical mixer... I couldn't find it anywhere. Finally, one
liquor store owner was able to provide *some* information: he
said that they just stopped getting it (or having a choice to
get it) from the distributors. I don't know about any tariffs
or recalls or anything. Other Schweppes drinks are still available,
and Canada Dry is a major producer of lemon sour/bitter lemon too.

I'll be interested to hear if anyone else knows anything. BTW,
the store owner I spoke to thought that maybe they just weren't
selling enough in this area, so it wasn't worth it to distribute.
Any other theories?

Sounds like it might be like Verners. Ever had that?

I'd drive an hour for a case of Bitter Lemon.

Maybe we can sell that line to Schweppes and offset our costs.

I be my dad would too, he's in Berkeley.

No, but I'll look for it. Thanks.

I don't know about the candy or the crystals, but, DAMN, I miss Schweppes
Bitter Lemon. Nothing like it before. Nothing like it sense.

If you're really hard up, Crystel Geyser's lemonade isn't bad. It's nice
and tart ... but nothing touches the face squincher, Bitter Lemon.

I know that Bitter Lemon is still available in other parts of the

country. If people send me e-mail, I'll look into finding a non-local
distributor and doing a food co-op arrangement (or maybe persuading a
local vendor to do the work).
