Hi,

Anyone know of some good noodle/pho places nearby the SJ Arena? I've
checked the SJ Mercury's food section and there seems to be alot but
most of them either had no ratings or only 1 star ratings. One place
that had 3 stars was Tay Ho on E. Santa Clara St. Or course that
probably does mean much anyways. Any other recommendations? Thanks.

You can't throw a rock without hitting a pho place on Santa Clara.
There's one around the conrer from the Arena at Stockton and The
Alameda, and literally 5 to 10 stretching on down the other way on E.
Santa Clara. Just start trying them, and you'll find one you like.

ps: They're SUPPOSED to be divey.

I know there's alot of pho places, Yahoo lists so many of them. I don't
live in the area but I'm going to an event at the Arena so we wanted to go
and get some cheap eats. Don't have time to try them all. :) Anyone have a
suggestion for a good place? Thanks.

There is a decent place on Santa Clara called Dac Phuc. It is located
a few blocks east of Highway 87. The place is a little dirty but the
food is adequate.

Hmm, if you want a non-dive you might try Vung Tau ( E.S.C & 3rd ?).
What I've had there I liked and Vietnamese acquaintances recommend it.
Not exactly near the Arena but close enough by me.

Absoultely one of THE best Pho places that stands out in San Jose is:
Dalat's Restaurant
on 408 E. Williams St. (at 9th & Williams)
Their noodles are shipped fresh every morning, and it really shows.
Their jumbo shrimp and crab is outstanding. And something that's not
on their menu, but definitely worth trying, which I have never seen at
any other restaurant, and could be their own recipe, is red rice. Try
that on the side. For starters, and is the most popular dish, go for
this noodle dish: #44 (small, if you want a large of the same noodle
dish go for #45, although #44 is filling enough). Their spring rolls
are excellent as well, but then again, most Vietnamese restaurants have
good spring rolls, both steamed & fried. Their fish sauce is excellent
as well. I suggest going for the steamed ones (shredded pork), but
that's not important since those are basically the same at every
Vietnamese restaurant and are all good quality. You'll also notice how
the pork and other cuts of meet at Dalat's is also quite lean and with
no fat. I discovered that they've been in business for around 15-20
years, so they have a lot of experience, and it shows. I haven't tried
their other dishes, but they do look excellent, and authentic, and they
have dishes served with french bread. For sure #44 is a don't miss on
their menu, as well as their red rice, so try those first.
