I went to Hamasushi with a friend last night. I like the food there,
but service was terrible this time. After we had finished and
waited over 20 minutes, I had to get up twice to flag down the
waitress. She seemed fairly inexperienced, so out came a rude
and stone-faced second waitress. The second round of sushi we
ordered got botched and there was no apology. And the seats in
the booth were dirty from some previous customer. I'll have to
think twice before I go back.

This place used to be great, before it was refurbished, improved and
expanded about 20 years ago. Sometimes things are better left alone.

The gyozas are still the same, though.

This was our experience, too. Wife and I enjoyed this restaurant on several
different occassions, but lately... The service is... severely lacking.
And our complaining also brought out that "stone-faced" troll to offer a
form of the Bum's Rush. We made sure that the manager knew that we wouldn't
be back after our last visit.

> I'll have to think twice before I go back.

Yep. There are too many other restaurants that offer a lot better service
and a LOT better sushi (i.e.: Akasaka.)

I should have listened to the warnings posted to this newsgroup.
I went to Hamasushi on a Thursday night, and the waitresses
outnumbered customers 2-to-1. They all seemed to be hanging in
the back room having some sort of chit-chat session.

I did have a couple of good experiences at Seto Sushi (El
Camino near Lawrence) over the holidays. My relatives from
out of town liked it so much the first time that we went back
again. Good food, fair prices, and friendly service -- very
enjoyable compared with Hamasushi.

Hmm, when my girlfriend and I tried Seto Sushi, we liked the ambiance and the
wait staff but the food was far below par. Maybe it was an off day?

(Our favorite place in the south bay remains Azuma, although the sushi boat
place in Valley Fair was good this Friday night...)

Urk. I'm surprised. You can do better than the sushi place in the mall,
though. Go up two blocks to Hedding and Winchester and visit Yuki Sushi.
The sushi is great there.

We were just at the sushi boat place in Valley Fair this weekend, and I was
really disappointed. They don't make the varieties fast enough, so you get a
few of the same things going round and round and round till some of the stuff
starts getting TOO familiar. The tuna was not great. We didn't eat much, and
one person in our party only ate soy beans. That is mighty expensive eating.

Has anyone tried that new Sushi place in Cupertino right by the 85 entrance on
Steven's Creek? It is in the shopping center with Hobees and the el-cheapo
movie theatre. I think it is called Tsunami Sushi. We ate there once and the
help was delightful, with excellent service, but the food wasn't fabulous. I've
been meaning to go back, and now I see that there is quite an improvement in
the patronage...when we were there I think there were a couple of other people
in the place, but last time we were at the theatre the place was crowded. I'd
like to know how the food is now.

Me too. Their terrible.
I used to use Hamasushi when I got visitors from Japan
but not anymore. They were(are?) over priced anyway, I
won't visit them privately.

I'm driving to Akane at los altos, both company and
private dinners. I had no chance to visit Akasaka.
I visited Kitsyo in Cupertino lately, they are pretty
good.

For sushi boat place, I go Kazoo (Winchester and Hamilton).
Kazoo was not good at all when they opened new restaurant
at Campbell. I was disappointed because I was expecting same
quality as J-Town Kazoo. But they are getting better now.

Suzuki--

Is this Akasaka the same one in Japantown, SF? Citysearch provides me with two
locations: SF and Menlo Park. I've been looking for an authentic sushi/sashimi
place and so far I've found Sakae in Burlingame to be the closest I've had to
what I tasted in Japan. Osho (Millbrae) was OK but they didn't even serve
Japanese short-grain rice!! Ebisu, IMO really sucks. I don't understand the
hype about that place.

If you can provide this group with your top picks, my wife (big sashimi fan) and
I would appreciate it.

TIA!

But is it Sushi Boat? I enjoy boat places for their speed of service and
convenience, and the variety of things I wouldn't normally either know or want
to order. Azuma is much much closer to my home if I am not going for Sushi
Boat.

Besides, it (like Dim Sum) is like a food lottery...Sometimes you win,
sometimes not. :)

Strange, either your expectations for boat places are much higher than mine (I
expect to see the same things again and again, with maybe 10-15% changing in
the time I eat there, this seems to be the trend at most places) or you
happened across the place at an off-time. There were three chefs pumping out
new items (interesting items, like crab-claws and a variety of interesting
rolls I don't usually see on boats.) I usually stay away from most of the raw
things at boat places though, but my girlfriend did eat a bunch and certainly
wasn't displeased (and she is fairly picky).

I went Friday night, and they weren't even that crowded (no waiting, but the
bar was fairly full.) I wonder if that has anything to do with it (although
I would expect the variety to be better under heavier crowds.)

Their variety of rolls is nice, their ambiance is excellent, their service has
(in the 3-4 times I've been) ranged from nice to very slow (with no reason for
being slow except being inconsiderate, the place was fairly empty.) The sushi
is not bad but not terribly exciting either. For a while my girlfriend wanted
to go here for a change of pace, but the last time the really slow service
pissed her off enough to take 'em off the list for now.

Also, they've gotten a couple orders of ours wrong (or, perhaps, they ran out
of ingredients, substituted other ingredients, but failed to tell us.) At
least one item on their menu was never available when we went there (I asked
for it a couple times, and they were always out of it...) I forget the item it
was.

One place in Redwood City (off El Camino, near the Hillsdale mall I think) is
Genko (it could be spelled Gengko, I forget). It's a small mom-and-pop shop
that is a favorite of my girlfriend's and her co-workers (and the place always
is full if not with a little waiting.) They even know/remember my girlfriend's
favorite items.

I think Kiss(in English: a sillago,a smelt-whiting) is pretty good
in your area. But it's really small tiny restaurant.
I have one more pretty good Japanese reataurant in San Mateo but
I cannot recall, I'll post it later.

I think the sushi boats he's talking about are the kind that go around
in the little water channel next to the sushi bar. Kazoo just has the
gigantic sushi boats they bring to your table. However, I've given the
Japantown one 3 tries, and it's been awful each time. Much better to go
to Tsugaru or Gombei.

No, I'm not talking about SJ Jtown Kazoo. Unfortunately Jtown
restaurants are down hill, I think.
Kazoo at Campbell is not bad for boat type of sushi restaurant.

I went to Hamasushi today for someone's going away lunch.. The lunch box
was $8.50. Unless it's gone up in the last year, it's about $6.50 at
Kikusushi..

My children LOVE the idea of the Sushi boats. They like everything about
it...they can pull stuff off the boats themselves, they can pile up the little
plates by design, and they can figure out how much we've spent by adding up the
plates. They like to watch the Sushi being made, too. So boat sushi places are
unfortunately going to be a part of our repetoire of restaurants until they get
a tad more sophisticated.

With that in mind, the only two boat places I know of are the one in Valley
Fair, and the one on Castro St in Mt View. I like the Castro st one a lot
better, but it is not convenient. Is there one near Cuptertino/Los Altos/Los
Gatos that someone might recommend as better than the Valley Fair one?

The owner is very personable! He loves showing off for kids/parents while
offering "soft" recommendations (to the kids). He makes a "49'er roll"
(he's a big 9'er fan -- but I can overlook that) that is quite good. He
also makes a GREAT tobiko<SP?> [flying fish roe]!

We really like Kazoo, which is Winchester@Hamilton in Campbell. Actually a
fairly quick drive from Valley Fair. And very kid friendly. There always
seem to be kids at the sushi bar when we go there.

Wow, thanks, Chuq. This is very close to my kid's school so makes an easy
dinner when I'm not in the mood to cook.
