I think http://www.winebuys.com has a nice selection and good prices.
Free FedEx delivery on orders over $25, which is great. I received a
delivery yesterday. They included a few bows and gift bags, too.
They're open for business to coincide with the Made in France
warehouse sale in Brisbane this Fri and Sat. Here's the email I
received.

Brisbane is hardly "minutes away from San Fransico". Brisbane happens to be
a few hours plane flight from Melbourne.
Please be aware that this is an international news groupd and don't be
parochial. Oh, and its not good form to advertise on newsgroups.

Since this is an NG devoted to food in the SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA,
you might have checked your geography first, before revealing your
ignorance to the world.

The traditional, possibly more constructive advice for this situation, for
very many years, has been to make use of the "distribution" field when
posting the news article. That has been used commonly in the past to limit
its geographical distribution. (For many years the SF Bay Area was
designated "ba" there.) As I haven't tried it lately, I'll leave it to
someone to comment from recent experience, if any.

I really have no affiliation with the business. I originally thought
to post in only ba.food, but thought to include the wine newsgroup
because of the topic.

I should have listened to my inner voice that was crying "do not
crosspost," but I threw caution to the wind.

Sorry!

Hi guys,
Speaking of long journeys, I am wondering if I should make the drive
out from Oakland (that's Oak, not Auk) for this sale.
As a non-drinker, I am looking for the gourmet food stuff -- but is it
really worth the drive, or would I be better served just hitting TJ's
and Cost Plus??

It entirely depends on servers configured to accept or reject certain
distributions. These days, an overwhelming majority of servers are
configured to accept everything and anything, so a distribution is
mostly useless.

I think the prices are just a little less than CP, not sure about TJs.
Perhaps, some of the fun for wine drinkers is the search, so maybe it
wouldn't be worth it. Remember, the winebuys guys have free FedEx and
that's cheaper than gas nowadays.

Thanks for the update. This problem of geographical scope of local postings
is pretty old. I responded to the Australian guy who snapped at Karen
O'Mara partly because I was guilty of the same kind of snapping myself. The
advertisement posted internationally for

SKIS 4/SALE

-- giving seven-digit local phone numbers (in New Jersey) -- is STILL there,
in the archives. Along with my annnoyed response to it, 21 years ago today.

Cheers -- Max

They have things you won't find at TJs or Cost Plus. I think the Le
Village soft drinks are much better than the icky sweet stuff
(lorella? something like that) sold in most "gourmet" markets or the
TJs brand, so I go every couple months to stock up on French lemonade,
apple cider and pink lemonade. I also pick up bar soap (it's a fairly
generic French brand, but I like it and the price is good), tubes or
tubs of harissa, merguez, jams and sometimes duck legs. Do monitor the
"sell by" dates, as sometimes they're close or past.

I'd make the trip once to see if you think it's worth it, it's not
that bad a trip from Oakland if you go early.

TJs had an Italian import for a while that seemed pretty good. How much
are bottles of Le Village? Draeger's has it, but at outrageous prices,
so I've never tried it.

Local source pointed out that distribution limits, though provided for in
article format, are ineffective in recent years (of the post-HTML newsgroup
world).

I am still trying to make amends for doing the same thing Ron Lel did, in
the past. An advertisement appeared internationally, giving only local
phone numbers in New Jersey (US):

SKIS 4/SALE

and I responded, more or less like Ron Lel. The ad is still there, in the
archives, along with my response (21 years ago exactly).

As a further note, here in the US we have named many places to honor those
elsewhere. A few offhand examples from memory are New Jersey, New York, New
London, Boston, Plymouth, Syracuse, Ithaca, New Orleans, New Iberia
(Louisiana), Athens (Georgia), Canton (Ohio), Paris (Texas), Vienna
(Virginia), Moscow (Idaho), Melbourne (Florida), and Brisbane (California).
These namings betoken a nontrivial element of respect.

Cheers -- Max

I'm sorry, Al, I'm nearly due for another visit so I don't recall the
exact price, but I buy it by the mixed case and at that discount it's
substantially cheaper than Draeger's. I wouldn't buy it there if we
ran out.

But I really don't like the other two brands, so in some ways there's
no comparison.
