The Slanted Door is the top grossing restaurant in San Francisco
Restaurants & Institutions magazine released their annual Top 100
grossing restaurants this week and only four San Francisco restaurants
made the cut.
The survey showed that sales were down from 2008 when combined totals
were $1.52 billion; this year it's $1.37. The top grossing restaurant
in the United States was Tao Restaurant and Night Club in Las Vegas,
followed by Tavern on the Green in New York City, which ironically
closed New Years Eve.
San Francisco first appears in slot 21: The Slanted Door recorded
$15.9 million in sales and 350,000 meals served; that's more than 950
meals a day. And while most other restaurant revenues have declined,
theirs went up slightly from 2008.
Scoma's on Fisherman's Wharf holds the 30th ranking with sales of
about $14.5 million and 400,000 meals served. That's followed by
Boulevard, again nominated for a James Beard Best Restaurant award
this year, with $12 million in sales and 123,500 covers. In 64th place
is the Cliff House with $11.5 millon in sales and 325,000 meals
served.

My arithmetic indicates that the average price of a meal at "The
Slanted Door" is then about $45. This is nothing like the high prices
people have complained about.

I almost misread your title as "grossest restaurants in SF". I'm not
sure if that would be more or less interesting.
It's impressive that a restaurant where the average cost is $100 per
meal (Boulevard, according to the above numbers) serves so many.

One can easily spend more than that per person. Or less, if
one is only having a drink. I'm guessing it's a per-guest average.

True, but I never go to the Slanted Door just for drinks. There are
better places for drinks.
I have.
And continues to maintain excellent quality. Even more
impressive. - Tony
