I heard that there will be a new Strait's
Cafe in Palo Alto. Can someone confirm this?

Yes, this is true . . . it was supposed to have opened shortly
after Spago's -- I'd call information (see if they have a number
for it yet) or the Straits Cafe in San Francisco and see if they
have any information.

I was at the Straits on Geary about 3 weeks ago, and they had a sign
up in the restaurant that said the Palo Alto restaurant is open now.
Located on the El Camino somewhere near Page Mill Road.

Straits Cafe Palo Alto has been open 2 months now for lunch and dinner.
Similar menus to SF location. Chef Chris Yeo has recently been cooking
at the Palo Alto location.

I can confirm this. My wife and I had dinner there for the second time
last night. Chris spent a significant part of the evening visiting
the guests.

Physically, the restaurant is almost, but not quite, finished. On our
first visit patio seating was still being constructed. It was available
last night, but there were still a few very minor glitches (regarding
umbrellas, heaters, seating). If you want to eat outside, take a sweater
just in case.

The food was excellent, excellent, excellent. Unfortunately I don't have
a copy of the menu handy, so I'm unable to give the proper names for the
dishes we had; however, I can recommend the lamb satay, vegetables in
curry/coconut sauce, noodles with tofu and shrimp, salmon with chili
paste in banana leaf, chocolate cake, and sago pudding (especially
for those of you who are feeling a lack of durian in your lives :-)).
The menu changed substantially since our first visit, so there appears
to be ample opportunity to return and sample something new each time.

Service was polite and attentive but not overbearing. The kitchen was
swamped, so things were a bit slow. In my opinion it was still well
worthwhile, though.

I believe it's slightly more expensive than the San Francisco cafe.
Last night's dinner (satay, salad with ahi, noodles with shrimp and tofu,
salmon, vegetable curry, cake, bottle of Navarro gewurztraminer) with
tax but without gratuity totalled almost exactly $100.
