I'm around south San Jose so I want some place close by because I want the
order to go.

This is a virtual impossibility -- unfortunately.
The large majority of the places that serve it at all
use biscuit mix (think "Bisquick") and gravy *mix* (gag)!
The gravy mix has some kind of faux sausage bits in it.
Terrible artificial taste. And that's the "standard"
that's served at most places out here these days.
Years ago we used to stop at a place on the north side
of Morgan Hill that was pretty good. I just looked at
yp.yahoo for MH, and nothing rings a bell. Don't know
if it's still around. Since they put new 101 through
in that area, we don't get into MH much any more.
If you want good B&G, you gotta find a place that makes
fried chicken. They use the bits left over from the
fried chicken, along with some of the oil, to make great B&G.
If you find it, let us know.
I don't tend to look for this sort of thing, and only go out for
breakfast when traveling, so don't have local suggestions. However,
the Black Bear Diner in the Shasta/Redding area, and the "From
Scratch" restaurant in the Barnyard in Carmel both have/had good
biscuits and gravy.
There is a Black Bear in Gilroy. I've only tried it for lunch (pretty
good but what I had wasn't all that memorable). They've apparently
expanded now to about 12 or 15 branches from their start up north.

Not close by south San Jose, but something to file away for
possible future reference: Spanky's in Ben Lomond. Order
the chicken-fried steak (yummy in its own right), and
biscuits and gravy come standard, on the side. You could
probably get them as an accompaniment to any other breakfast
dish if you wanted to.

The Southern Kitchen in Los Gatos serves biscuits and gravy. I've never
eaten there, but it's rather popular.

That's right...Southern Kitchen is probably your best bet around these
parts. Otherwise, you'll have to suffice on IHOP and similar places.
You could try the Cardinal at Hillsdale and Meridien, but I don't
think they do biscuits and gravy and their country gravy (I've had it
on the chicken-fried steak) isn't particularly good. I doubt if their
biscuits would be made from scratch, if they have biscuits at all.
Another thing: supposedly, on the weekends, Southern Kitchen is a
madhouse.
