Good grief, that brings back memories. Who'da thunk it.
Luhr Jensen ("Luhr's Lures") and Company still exists, as far as I
know, in Hood River, Oregon, my home town. I went to school with
the Jensen kids; it's that kind of a town. Everyone knows
everyone else, or at least used to. My mother worked there
briefly on one of the lure fabrication machines. We had a Little Chief
Smoker (probably still do), so I know exactly what you mean. We used
hickory chips in it to smoke salmon. My father would come home with
a catch of Columbia River salmon, soak some in brine and put it in
the Little Chief. I remember you want to wrap the smoked salmon tightly
when you put it in the fridge or the smoke smell permeates everything.
It is not at all like lox or gravlax, but then, you know that.
Aha...you can buy a Luhr Jensen smoker on the Web from RiverBend Stores:

...so I guess they're still in business.

If you want to see a unit you can stop by my place in Mountain View and
take a look. It's well worth the cost, and we are producing increcible BBQ
every week out of this dude.

It is stainless steel and comes in electric (recommended for maintaining
correct temperatures) and charcoal models.
Mine was purchased from Cabela's 1 800 237-4444. They no longer carry
MECO but do have Little Chief and Brinkman.
As for wood, I hate buying that since there is so many good pruning
trimings available from grapevine cuttings to alder to oak to apple,
plum, apricot and cherry.
When i go steelheading i almost carry a little pruner along to cut some
alder which is hard to beat for fish.

Charleen I want to thank you and the others that replied to my question on
the Luhr Jensen Smokers. Down here in Florida people look at you crooked
when you mention the name. At the location you provided I got an ordering
form and the order will be in the snail mail tomorrow.
May I say to the others thanks for your recommendations but a smoker is
like a car. Once you find one that works so well you hate to change. Also
once you find one that lasts 15 years you have to go back to that product.
I smoke a lot of fish (very bad for the blood pressure what with the salt)
and have NEVER had a bad result. Maybe I should think about being a
distributer down here eh.
