Decent Russian Restaurant Found in Cupertino! Sochi Cafe & Grill

corner of Homestead and Hollenbeck, in the same plaza as Kokila's Kitchen,
which used to be Samrat) offer "Russian & Georgian" cuisine.
We'd noticed it about a month ago, but only just this evening had occasion to
try it.
It is, in a word, GOOD!
I can't vouch for the atmosphere, as our friend picked up our dinner as take
out, however I can vouch for the food. The borscht, although not quite as
good as my friend's Bub's, was still very tasty. Really the only difference
was in richness - some borschts are made with a meat in the broth, and this
one seemed to not have the element of meat - but it was still very tasty.
For appetizers we had the piroshkis of the day - choice of ground beef, or
cabbage. I had the cabbage, and it was very tasty. The dough wasn't like any
I'd had before, but then I am more used to Polish pierogis - the dough tonight
was more like a very thin bread - almost like tender calzone dough. We also
had "Georgian Style Cheese Pie", which was large enough to provide for
four generous appetizer servings.
I didn't have a main dish, but our friend had the beef stew, and said that it
was very good. They also offer chicken kiev, deep-fried beef pie, grilled
hen, and a shish-kabob sort of thing.
Included was a generous amount of very tasty, warm, heavy rye bread.
The food was very good, and we will definitely be going back.
Please try this place - they were empty this evening, and it definitely
deserves a chance!

agreement...Their food is very good and it's a family-run business. Alas,
lately I haven't been going 'cause I'm trying to watch my weight. ;^) Alas,
my previous posts don't seem to be available at deja.com or remarq.com.
I've had (I believe) everything on their menu and the items range from good
to fabulous (I'd have to say their "pressed hen" is best, and their potato
salad is tops). Service can be a bit spotty but they certainly seem to care
(unlike a great many bay area restaurants/owners.)
Don't fret too much about their being empty, they occasionally get very
large parties there (sometimes even taking the whole restaurant. :)
And, as usual, I have no affiliation with this restaurant.

lamb kabobs. Both were excellent. After talking with the owner, he explained
that Sochi is the name of their home town - a resort area in Russia (kinda like
Hawaii is to the US).
It's definitely a place we will visit again. Thanks for the recommendation.
