What do you mean by a fancy party cake? A large sheet cake?
For traditional 10" or 12" round cakes, I would recommend the following in
the South Bay:
La Patisserie in Cupertino:

Sugar, Butter, Flour in Sunnyvale & Campbell:

Hong Kong Bakery & Cafe in Mountain View (great for cakes that are not too
sweet)

I would have once agreed but our last two cakes (just a couple weeks ago)
show they're changing either the key ingredients or testing old recipes. And
not for the better, either.

We tried them and they're good but expensive.

Also a jewel at one time but the reviews are mixed lately.

What type of cakes did you order?
The last two cakes we ordered from them, one in January (Black Forest) and
one in May (a B-52), were excellent.
The only miss we had with them in regards to cakes was when we ordered a
Dobos Torte from them about 7 or 8 years ago (they no longer offer it). It
was a very poor rendition of a Dobos Torte.

Don't know about their regular cakes, but the Burnt Almond cake from
Dick's Bakery on Meridian in SJ is quite good.

That reminds me of one cake that I miss since the demise of Blum's and
finally Stickney's, the Coffee Crunch Cake.
Does anyone know anyplace in the Bay Area that still bakes a good coffee
crunch cake?
(BTW, I just Googled for it and notice that Martha Stewart, no less, now has
the recipe for Blum's Coffee Crunch Cake posted on her website!)

I'm not a big cake eater, but dang, that sounds good!

Never trust a dog to watch your food.
The lemon mousse 10" and mocha mousse 10" were for a minor clan gathering;
normally, both are gobbled up quickly but neither were touched after the
first slice by everyone. Tastes cited as "off." The next party, we ordered
the spice cake and burnt almond. Again, these are _normally_ devoured within
seconds but 1/3 of the spice cake was still around and 2/3 of the burnt
almond cake (minus the toasted almond "crust" which was attacked
continuously throughout the party) were left to harden and dry out. These
didn't seem to taste as good as we "remembered." At $22.00 to $29.00 a pop,
I'd like them to retain the previous owners' recipes.

I'm a bit concerned to hear this, as La Patisserie has been our go-to
bakery for the past several years. We have not noted any change in
quality, up to and including a couple of weeks ago, but our selections
are almost always restricted to their chocolate offerings. Which, for
what it's worth, were still excellent based on our last experience.

Dick's Bakery at the corner of Hamilton and Meridian (Willow Glen
area of San Jose) makes FANTASTIC burnt almond cakes. Not too
sweet, they'll make it any size you want, in chocolate, white,
marble, or spice. Around October they have a pumpkin variety which
is heavenly. I can't recommend Dick's Bakery strongly enough. We
got one for a party of 30 people a couple months ago and everyone
commented how good the cake was.
