I was in Sprouts today and was going to get some beef for my son but I
noticed that Sprouts no longer sells USDA Choice. I asked someone about
it and the response was "it's Harris Ranch beef," which made no sense
but I didn't want to argue about it.

I actually left without buying anything. The person in front of me in
line had some coupon for $5 off a purchase of a certain amount, and she
was a bit low so the cashier suggested that she go add some more items
to the order. So in the middle of ringing up the order, the customer
goes back to the produce section to bag up some tomatoes, leaving
everyone else in line to wait. This is with two other customers already
with their stuff on the belt, myself included. I told the cashier to
have someone put my stuff back, I couldn't wait that long.

We got a coupon from Lucky today specifically for Harris Ranch beef,
claiming that it's all Choice. So maybe that's what the employee was
told to say.

Harris Ranch ships to supermarkets both USDA Select and USDA Choice beef.

It's easy to tell the difference between the two because the USDA Choice
beef comes with GREEN labels with "USDA CHOICE" printed at the top of the
Harris Ranch logo, while the USDA Select beef comes with GRAY labels with no
indication of any USDA grade (though it is USDA Select).

So far as I can make out, Harris Ranch beef is graded, and is available
as either Choice or Select:

Does it say "USDA Choice?" I suspect that some stores are saying that
their meat is equivalent o Choice. I once asked the butcher at Safeway
what grade of meat they sell and he told be that it was equivalent to
USDA Select. This was only a few weeks ago.

Just above the center of the page on the left hand side, this Sprouts ad says
"USDA Choice Rump Roast or Stew" with the green Harris Ranch logo inset
in the picture:

This Lucky's ad (pg2) says "Harris Ranch Choice Angus Beef, California grown".
