I'm looking for Russian restaurants around the Peninsula-to-San Jose
area... I did a search on the Bay Area Restaurant Guide on the web,
and all they had were 2, for the whole Bay Area! (Rasputin Russian
Restaurant and Deli in San Mateo and Russian Delicatessens club in
San Francisco.) Surely there are some more...?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Hi Anne,

Here's a couple;

the Cinderella Bakery and Restaurant.
It's on Balboa St, between 5th and 6th Aves in SF.
I've been eating here since 1967. I've never been disappointed.
Special treats; vatrushka (russian cheesecake), the Barley/Mushroom soup,
and the piroshki. If you go at Easter time and they have carrot or potato
piroshki, get 'em.

There's also a new russian bakery on Geary, just around 20th or 21st
avenue. It's on the same block as Gaspare's Italian restaurant.

I've had only the poppy seed pastries from this place, but they were very,
very good. The piroshki all looked great.

Recommended.

Hope this helps,

aric

The former Continental Deli, apparently renamed the Russian Deli, on the
northbound side of Winchester just south of Hamilton in San Jose. It is
mostly a mom-and-pop deli, but they do have a couple of tables and do
serve a limited menu plus daily specials. I don't know of any other, but
would appreciate a posting here if you find one. I have fond memories of
the Little Russian Cafe' in Boulder, CO.

Used to be a rather formal one in SF, on Geary I think, called the Russian
Renaissance. Don't know if it's still there. My favorite Russian place
in SF is, unfortunately, long gone: Archil's

The last time I was in San Francisco, I walked by a new Russian restaurant
on Balboa and 5th Avenue across the street from the Cinderella Bakery. I
think the name of it is "Katarina" or "Katrina." The menu wasn't
extensive but the tables were full. This was in March.

There's Misha's Russian Cafe in San Anselmo, but the one time I ate there,
about 6 months ago, it was just terrible.

Yes, it is. Around Sixteenth or so. Same owner.
It was a year or two old when I first went there following
Nikita Khruschev's visit and their catering to him. That impressed me.
So did the food my first dozen or so visits but I think it isn't as
good now as it once was.

Curtis,

Try the Cinderella. It's much better than the Little Russian Cafe, IMHO.
Although I do have fond memories of the Little Russian Cafe as well.
