Not at all surprised that it improved your ballroom dancing; this
frequently happens. Getting addicted to ballet frequently happens, too.
The simplest thing is probably to look in the Yellow Pages under
dance instruction. If you draw a blank, I don't know what to tell
you. If they list more than one, go & try every one & compare.
Some possible criteria are listed in Part 2 of the ballet-modern
FAQ, but on the basis of a semester course you probably know what
to look for already.

There is the Pacific Ballet Academy in Los Altos, that offers different
adult classes throughout the week
PAcific Ballet Academy is in Mountain View! It's number is :
(415) 969-4614
I enjoyed taking adult ballet at Western Ballet in Mountain View. I
don't have the phone number or address on me now, but they're on Old
Middlefield near Rengstorff Avenue.
Good Luck!
Cheers,

P.S. If you go there tell Linda H. that I say hi.
Although training in ballet (or any other system of western dance)
would be beneficial to the ballroom dancer , I would recommend jazz
classes instead . Ballet is done high on the balls of the feet or on
the toes while jazz employs a more grounded technique which should
translate better to ballroom than ballet.(I took 3 semesters of jazz
dance at Mission College back in the mid-eighties and it was very
beneficial to my ballroom dance technique).
While I'm sure that a highly trained ballet dancer would have no
difficulty learning ballroom technique I would worry that the amateur
might carry away some habits not benefical to ballroom, especially the
smooth dances. For example, ballroom requires a strong heel lead(from
both leader and follower) with its accompanying strong lowering
action. This is a way of moving foreign to ballet. Jazz employs a lot
of lowering actions(albeit often without the heel lead). Additionally
jazz is usually done to typically American dance rythms which would
directly aid in training the body for the type of movement required in
ballroom, latin and American rythm dances.
I have only seen perhaps two or three examples of someone I knew to be
ballet trained doing ballroom all wrong (toe leads, bouncy, etc.)but if
you are considering ballet training to enhance your ballroom dancing
you should be aware of the differences and avoid carrying
inappropriate
techniques from one style of dance to the other.
BTW, you might have seen ballets in which male and female partners do
a rendition of the viennese waltz or some generic ballroom style dance
and invariably they will NOT be employing heel leads. The only
exception I have ever seen was in a short ballet danced by Susan
Farell and Peter Martins in which they were dressed in ballroom style
costumes complete with ballroom shoes and I noticed that Mr. Martins
was using heel leads and a typically ballroom frame, but I remembered
reading or hearing somewhere that he had started out dancing ballroom
as a child.

There was a thread about this a few months back. The general consensus
was that ballet dancers seemed to pick up ballroom dancing very
quickly. The star of the movie, "Strictly Ballroom", Paul something,
was a dancer with the Australian Ballet. Of course, most ballet dancers
have had some jazz at one time or another, and certainly professional
ballet dancers are required to be versatile in different dance forms
and styles. Certainly they have to realize what they can carry from one
style to another - it's kind of hard to confuse a jazz pirouette with a
traditional ballet pirouette! Any ballet dancer wanting to pursue a
career in dance should take classes in many different kinds of dance,
just so they've had them and are familiar with them.

Poem for Program Note:
An essence unknown - ineffably sensed,
Which cannot pretend - ne'er has an offense,
'Tis all that we are - after all that is said,
Momentous it moves - within us instead.
Pure as it is - pristine as the wind,
True as it is - just watch it give in,
Honest it is -absent of pretense,
Shadows of Spirit - a wondrous suspense.

I. Imprisonment
Imprisoned we are,
By Illusion and fear,
Our souls held back,
Our spirits restrained.
II. A Chance
In moments of despair,
We may open the door,
Partially through,
We discover a new dimension.
III. Just Crazy
The cosmic joke of it all,
Seeks no revenge on anguish,
The fun makes no sense at all,
Yet how refreshing - just crazy.
IV. Captured Back
Our minds now in confusion,
Once the soul has sung freely,
Take us back regressively,
Yet no quite so far.
V. Pain and Joy
Though our hearts now fly,
And our very essence emerges,
A melancholy joy held too close,
Bares tears of such longing.
VI. Paradoxis
Pulled and pushed into life's barrage,
We randomly seek what is already found.
VII. Agreement
Pristine and certain is that which we find,
How we really know,
Life is exactly what it appears to be,
Or isn't -
(We fade into the universe wiser).
