NOTE: The Berkeley contra, this Wednesday, has California/Nevada favorite
caller, Susan Petrick, matched with the glorious sounds of fiddle supergroup
Ratnip, with Caroline McCaskey and Cole Ingraham (of the Fiddle Rats), Howard
Booster (of Flashpoint), and Alan Snyder (the OpporTunists). Should be an
exceptionally great evening!
This Saturday is the annual BACDS Fall English Ball in San Mateo. The
ball is returning to its roots with founding caller David Newitt and a program
with a lot of old favorites, joined with an exciting new musical mix of
established and rising English-music stars (Katherine Carvajal, Erik Ievins,
Rebecca King, Michelle Levy). There's an afternoon workshop to learn harder
dances, the dances are prompted as necessary, and you can buy tickets at the
door. What's not to like? http://www.bacds.org/fallball
(But if you'd rather contra dance, Ken Olcott is in San Francisco with the
hard-driving old-timey sound of Harmon's Peak; they'll make you want to
buck-dance.)
And Sunday afternoon, the San Francisco English dance celebrates the
sesquicentennial of the birth of Cecil Sharp, the man most responsible for the
revival of English Country dancing in the early 1900s, and the first
reconstructor of many of the dances we still do today. Come to DanceGround
Keriac for a festive afternoon with the Bay Area's prodical (adopted) son Nick
Cuccia, back from Merced to call, and a strong string-based band!

NOTES:
Several special dances this week. Before the Berkeley Wednesday English, at
6:30, is a special FREE introductory workshop. This would be an ideal
introduction to English dance if you want to check it out or if you got friends
to do; if you're an experienced English dancer come along and model good style
and get another hour of dance in on Wednesday!
This weekend, If you've got relatives visiting and you don't know what to do
with them on Thanksgiving weekend, bring 'em along! The 4th Friday SF contra
dance has the smooth and clear calling of Charlie Fenton and the lively
old-timey tunes of Kathrine Gardner (of the Contrabandits, GUPpies and
KJammers), Dave Courchaine (of the Whiskey Brothers), and all-around old-time
asset Dave Brown. The 4th Saturday English dance in Berkeley is usually an
experienced dance, but this time it's a holiday party for all with Kind and
Easie calling by Lise Dyckman and absolutely top-flight music, or to the Palo
Alto contra dance, with the clear and precise calling of Eric Black,
the traditional dessert potluck (no turkey!) and wonderful Celtic music from
Three Fifths of Scotch.
