When my family moved to San Jose, our next door neighbors happened to be the
Dariens. Frank was a DJ with KSJO (now KLIV) and is famous for his "Howdy
Honker" salute. In 1959, he moved to television with "Record Hop" on KNTV
and also formed his new ad agency, Darien, Russell, and Hill.
Years later, when KBAY moved from Winchester Blvd. to its own building in
Campbell, Betty Darien (Frank's first wife) was in charge of the interior
decorating.
Frank Darien, Jr. joins an ever-growing list of south bay broadcasting
legends who have passed on, including Doc Herold, Bill Weaver, George Snell,
George Mardikian, Dick Ryan, Dick Ingraham, Joe Levitt, Ed Meece, and Mikel
Hunter.
He is survived by four children, seven grandchildren, and his second wife,
Dean (who was KBAY's receptionist for several years).
