This is renewing my resolve to get IBOC on KKUP as soon as we can. I
have a source of equipment that will incur no charge to the station.
Interestingly, I can get KALW quite well on my CC Radio in my kitchen.
I'm sure that will go away completely once we turn up the HD!
I certainly hope KALW doesn't have any subscribers worth worrying about
in the south bay!

Have you considered phoning KALW and talking with the manager about all
of this?
What are they going to do...turn it off?

What manager would that be? Let's just hope that the SFUSD doesn't
leave the seat vacant for a long interval as they did before Nicole
Sawaya was hired.

Maybe. The exchange goes like this:
"Hi, John Higdon here from KKUP. You know, we have adjacent channels
and we're both going to be running IBOC. I think there's something we
should talk about."
"What is that?"
"Well, both our stations have marginal coverage, so we need every clear
watt we can get. It used to be that KKUP came into SF just fine and
KALW came into Cupertino just fine. But, when you turn on your IBOC it
wipes out KKUP north of Redwood City, and when we turn on our IBOC it
will wipe out KALW south of San Bruno. I know that you need all the
listeners you can get with your signal. So do we. Do you have any
suggestions?"
"Well, no. I wasn't aware that our signal would be wiped out. That
would be half our coverage. KALW has a lot of South Bay listners.
What do you suggest?"
"We've done some research on the matter and we think that it might be
best for both stations to just not use IBOC at all until they can
re-engineer it so that our stations don't interfere with each other.
We can eventually turn it on, I'm sure, after they've refined the
system so that it doesn't cause interference. But, let's say we do a
moratorium on it for 5 years. Neither KKUP nor KALW runs IBOC and thus
we'll be able to both operate with full coverage."
Of course, your words might be different. You don't use the word
"thus" anyway.
KALW is losing or has lost its manager, but surely someone is in
charge. Bill Helgason if nobody else.
Has lost, as of March 24.
>surely someone is in charge.
A caretaker, or someone with the moxie to turn off an expensive and
new piece of equipment?
I'm in sympathy with the comments about IBOC and FWIW I spoke against
it at KALW. Unfortunately the salespeople from Ibiquity did their job
well and the battle was already over. It's a shame if only because
KALW has a lot of other worthy projects that are starved for funding.
We can all hope that the SFUSD will get on the stick and hire a
well-qualified new manager soon.

A point I brought up in this forum back when KALW got the grant: the
money spent on IBOC would be manna from heaven if spent on really
worthwhile stuff that the station undoubtedly needs or could use in its
day-to-day operation. From here, it would appear that the only real
result that KALW achieved was to cripple KKUP's coverage area. I realize
that was never the intent by anyone at KALW, but that's what they got
nonetheless. Stuff the station could really use and benefit from went
begging.

I have to admit that negotiating a moratorium on IBOC is intriguing. The
commercial band is a mess and populated by ruthless morons. I seriously
doubt that civilized behavior is an option there. But south of 92, I
like to think that we are more like ladies and gentlemen.
Of course, that could be fantasy...but it's a thought.
>"But, let's say we do a

I could be wrong, but the way I understand it is that KALW got a substantial
grant to install IBOC. Turning it off at this point would cause substantial
problems with regard to that grant money I would imagine.
That's why I say it's probably not going to be an option to turn it off.
However, the mutual loss of listeners (and concomitant loss of revenue) for
both stations is a situation that needs to be made very public.
I'd love for there to be some major lawsuits down the road from broadcasters
who have been destroyed by iBiquity's radio curse.
