Is there a good solution out there for transporting a second bike
(with no rider) using my bike? I have a potential occasional commute
scenario where this would be handy.

I'm thinking something like a rear rack that can hold the front wheel
of the second bike securely and basically tow it behind me. I'm not
against fabricating/modifying existing hardware myself, but I have no
idea if this would even be rideable as I'm picturing it. I guess if
the second bike was a folding bike that would make things easy enough,
but I'm thinking two more or less regular bikes.

If anybody has any ideas I'd appreciate it.

I tried doing something like this, and it didn't work well

See "http://www.trail-gator.com/". I don't know how well it would work
with two adult bicycles, but I'm sure you could figure out a way to get
it to work, maybe you'd have to fabricate something out of aluminum bar.

If the second bike has a quick-release front wheel then it's pretty
straightforward to make an attachment to fit on a regular luggage rack
of the towing bike. Either get a quick release mount like those used
on many car roof-top racks and pickup bed racks or modify an old QR
front hub so it can be securely attached near the back of the luggage
rack. Then when you want to tow the bike remove its front wheel,
clamp the fork dropouts in the QR on the luggage rack of the towing
bike, and bungie/strap the front wheel to the main triangle of the
towed bike.

I'm thinking you could bungie the removed front wheel to the side of

the main triangle of the towed bike.

Also I'd say you will want to fab those attachment points way down low
on the tow bike to keep the towed bike's center of gravity low.

I have a thought also of adding a second control point, perhaps
imagine a line between the tower's seat post and the towee's neck or
handle bar stem.

IN a very simple form I envision something like a PVC pipe w/ Velcro
straps on each end, these straps would wrap around the seat post on
one end, securing it, and the other bike's neck on the other making
for a 'triangle' so to speak w/ this thing as the top point and the
secured forks as the lower two points.

sometimes my replies get to rambling in nature...

Could you remove both wheels of the second bike, and put the bike and
the wheels into something like a BOB trailer? I'm just thinking that
this would hold up better if you were to fall over, or something.

C'mon, tell us the situation where this would be handy! Let me
guess... you want to commute on your commute bike, but take your race
bike for the Noon ride or after-work training ride. Or... you commute
both ways on one bike, but one day you are going to get a ride in to
work with a friend and you need a bike to get home on. Or... you need
to drop off one bike for service on your way to work and pick it up on
your way home. Wait, I know, you are loaning the second bike to a
friend at work so he/she can try bike commuting to see if they like
it! Am I getting warm?
