Erin,

This sounds very exciting.  There is a very real need for interoperability and adoption across the board.  You may recall that at the Kentucky Governor’s School for Entrepreneurs (GSE) last summer we used badges to mark the learning accomplished by our high school age entrepreneurs.  This is a 3 week summer program, very intense, but very unique in terms of trying to interface with a traditional high school’s transcription requirements.  In the end we had nearly 30 entrepreneurs who were able to return to the schools and apply for an actual credit on their transcript.  Thanks to extensive work on the part of GSE staff communicating with the individual schools, before, during, and after the program, many of the students were able to have that credit recorded on their high school transcript.  To say this is disruptive would be to put it very mildly. I have yet to hear of another project in which students from diverse schools, working during a relatively short but intensive period, were able to earn an actual credit that was validated through Open Badges.  I’m sure you are well aware of many other reasons why this is a very disruptive, but very needed step forward in public education.

GSE will be held again this summer and we are once again planning to use open badges as a way to record the learning achieved by the Entrepreneurs.  Perhaps we can work together to determine ways in which our experience can be helpful in moving the badging landscape forward in school settings.  Here is a link to the webpage that explains the option for “Performance-based credits” and the use of Mozilla Open Badges in the program. http://www.kentuckygse.com/index.php/for-schools/performance-based-credit

I am copying this to Laurie Daugherty, the GSE executive director.  Feel free to reach out to Laurie and her team.

Hi all –

In case you've missed the announcement this morning - Open Badges has
partnered with IMS Global <http://www.imsglobal.org/aboutims.html>, the
leading education technology standards body, to accelerate the adoption and
interoperability of badges in education & workforce.

The new IMS Digital Credentialing initiative will be focused on furthering
the adoption, integration and transferability of digital credentials,
within institutions, schools, and corporations. The initial aim of IMS
Digital Credentialing will be to further investigate and expand the reach,
adoption and value of open badges in several potential ways, including:
badge integration in the IMS eT work
<http://www.imsglobal.org/cbe/index.html> already underway, Open Badge
Standard <http://specification.openbadges.org/> extension work, and
exploration of new models of badge system design, storage, usage, or
evaluation.

This exciting new partnership is a natural evolution of all of the hard
work that we have accomplished together so far. For more information on
what this means for the Open Badges work, check out my blog post here
<http://erinknight.com/post/116992067678/ims-digital-credentialing-initiative>
and the IMS Global press release here.

Tell us what you think of this new partnership and opportunity! Send us
your questions, thoughts, concerns, high fives, etc.

Thanks,
Erin
