Hi everyone,

I'm posting the recording of yesterday's discussion as, instead of being a writing sprint as we intended, Ian, Mikko and I discussed:
  • badge names (basically agreeing with Marc Lesser's comments)
  • pathways vs. 'systems'
  • federated systems

It's worth a listen. Go for a walk! Enjoy nature, listen to our dulcet tones. ;-)

Thank you to Carla who sent along her thoughts at the start of the call for us to discuss. For those who didn't see, here's an excerpt:

So, I'm conflicted when we're talking about this here and now. Agreed that a system is important—vital even—but it's also a lot more complex and will most likely impact our deliverable timeframe. That said, I'm open to hearing how we might be able to make this all happen in an extremely abbreviated timeframe.

Given that we advertised yesterday's session as a 'sprint' and the main call isn't until Monday, we'll hold off making a final decision until people have had a chance to listen, think, and discuss further. The proposal is: we replace the term 'pathway' with the term 'micro-system'. This means our (implied) taxonomy would be:

  • Micro-system (badges relating to the Privacy competency)
  • System (badges relating to the Web Literacy map as a whole)
  • Ecosystem (badges relating to New Literacies by everyone)

The argument for going with 'micro-system' (or some other term) is the feeling that 'pathway' presents artificial constraints that we don't really need to place upon ourselves. This is probably most obvious if you look at the three options within the Creating a workable badge system section of the Google Doc. It would be difficult to claim that they represent a 'pathway', yet I think they represent reasonably accurately our discussions over the last few months.

Anyway, I'll post the details of the meeting later today. Please use this thread or the Google Doc to share your thoughts about the above - or anything else relating to the deliverable.

Have a great weekend,

-----
