Hi everyone,

Looking forward to meeting later today! (details below as a reminder).

So as not to spring this on people right at the start of the call, and to give you all some time to consider it, I want to propose something. I think we should focus on creating a badge 'system' rather than badge 'pathway'. I'm convinced by Matthew Willse's observation (see http://bit.ly/YhTZBE) that a lot of the problems we have when thinking about 'pathways' are with the metaphor itself. I think that thinking in terms of badge 'systems' instead will give us some of the flexibility we need.

Thoughts?

Agreed. I would suggest that you start us off today with a quick five minutes on how this change would affect our work.

See you all soon.

Erf. You know how I feel about badge systems. I <3 them. I design them. I make tools to help other people design them.

So, I'm conflicted when we're talking about this here and now. Agreed that a system is important—vital even—but it's also a lot more complex and will most likely impact our deliverable timeframe. That said, I'm open to hearing how we might be able to make this all happen in an extremely abbreviated timeframe.

Let's also keep in mind that, essentially, effective pathways are the components of a badge system; how might we be able to leverage what we have into a strong system after our initial BA deliverable?

Looking forward to hearing your responses,
Carla

All,

Is there a value to finishing what we've started (in front of us) and then talking about 'system' as a next step? I'll all for thinking about the latest and greatest, but sometimes it's helpful to get a final product complete so as to have something to test and iterate as need be.

Just throwing that out there for consideration.

Thanks Dave. Not actually suggesting we add any more work, rather we replace 'pathway' with 'micro-system' to better describe what we've already done!

Interested to see if a consensus emerges either way. :-)

Sounds cool -- other than syntax (which we can debate until cows turn blue, fly and play the banjo), what functional changes occur if we transition to a "micro-system"?

So that's my argument - we can more accurately describe what we're doing (and what we've already done) through 'micro-system' than we can through 'pathway'.

As I said above, I think a quick scan of the section currently entitled Creating a workable badge system brings this point home. But I might be wrong. :-)
