In the webinar, Colet Bartow showed an example of a state report, which basically asked students to collect information. Someone asked, "The state report has
many elements and products...but information is all facts. Where is the
thinking, compare/contrast etc. components?" Colet replied, "Exactly...the list of items doesn't
reflect the information skills needed to successfully complete the project. Lesson
improvement is a big goal that can be accomplished through the Big6 process! Framing content in the context of information
problem solving helps move assignments from low level to higher levels and [makes them] much
more engaging for teachers and students. Start
with the Essential Questions and Enduring Understandings--A BIG QUESTION helps
get us started!"
Janet suggested grouping students by region, with each of them reporting on one state in that region. Then, ask "in which state would you prefer to life? and why?" or "Which state would you prefer to visit on vacation? Explain the reasons for your choice."
