Though I missed the overview webinar this time around, I appreciate being able to access the archive and b6month google group to collaborate with past and present colleagues

This coming year I am looking forward to expanding my use of b6month this year in my elementary LIT program, 12 classes K5, as my position has expanded from half to full time, with both library and technology lessons coordinated. Recovering the time to provide a full time LIT instruction and services will let me hit important topics twice each week. September's kickoff with location is a natural fit, as some will be new and all will benefit from clear instruction and support in both print and online library access.

An added element for my school will be an expanded use (by students and staff) of Seattle public library print and online resources, as part of a pilot collaboration to provide "two library" support to students and families. Twice a week sessions might work especially nicely as I introduce catalog and database access first in school resources then again in public library resources.  I would enjoy hearing from others who have developed public library catalog/database lesson ideas...and will certainly share how things roll forward at my little library@Sanislo.

Congratulations on full-time employment! Oregon has very few teacher-librarians in its schools, but we do have statewide access to online resources in both school and public libraries. I have been impressed by the outreach from the public library's children's librarian to the schools, and the summer program she provides here in my little beach town.

Hi Craig,

How different are the school and public ILSs?  It might be interesting to do a guided treasure hunt with the students to have them compare the login. search interface, contact info, etc.  One of the advantages that I experienced as the director of a combined school/public library was one interface/one system.  It made the cradle to grave experience more seamless and definitely made transferability of lessons learned in school more immediately realized.  Kids taught parents.  CB

Colet:
When/where did you do the combined library effort?  A joint catalog is certainly a goal in efforts now afoot in Nashville "Limitlesslibraries.org and mynyc.org efforts...and it is no surprise if/that this has been around for a while in smaller communities/systems as well.  Do other folks in this Big6 community have experience with "two library/public&school" collaborations?

I like your "guided treasure hunt" activity idea, as a way to teach  search in each and to explore and evaluate various sources. It sounds like something I could build out from the "School Your Parents" nights  http://www.spl.org/about-the-library/library-news-releases/school-your-parents-910 being conducted at my partner public libraries in the coming weeks.

Glad you liked the treasure hunt idea. I was director of the school-public library for 10 of the 13 years I was in Manhattan. Lots of great lessons learned and opportunities to maximize access. Also, our Montana Shared Catalog is a Multi-type system. We like to think that we've blazed some trails for seamless library experiences.

Everyone wins when access is the goal.

Yes, the Little Apple, not the Big Apple.  That's MY library!
