DAMBALLAH'S KISS: A series about reconnecting.
a solo art show by Aje Bird
Damballah is the Deity of rebirth, rejuvenation, and creation his presence
brings peace, and harmony; something we could all use a little more of in our
lives.
He is not unlike the cosmic serpent that cradles the world within her coils,
protecting us as a mother does a child. Throughout this series a number of
Deities have been invoked in the creative process and their presence is evident
in the art that has presented itself. Choosing to take a bold step towards my
destiny "Damballah's Kiss" is the only natural progression in my relationship
with the spirits and my higher self. This series if nothing else seeks to open
and address neglected parts of the human soul, specifically those darker all
knowing parts which have been labeled as taboo. Its meant to be a liberating
experience. Reminiscent of days of old when our spirits were in tune with the
source and we knew the divinity that resided with in each and every one of us.
"Damballah's Kiss" is a general invitation to participate in your own divinity.

Aje Bird, born Jieshrae (middle name) Washington, began dabbling in the visual
arts at the age of three.
She began using colored pencils and oil pastels in the early stages of her
career, then her medium graduated to aerosol painting and lettering as she
began her love affair with Hip Hop culture. Aje discovered a love of artistic
letters in a cartooning class in high school and at 17 was introduced to the
Hip Hop community and Graffiti where she was taken under the wing of Graffiti
writer, MR. She then began the all female graf crew B.O.P (Bombing on Phallus/
Birds of Prey). Some of Aje's creative influences include Bler 1, Scales of the
INI crew, Angel 179 and Khazm of Madkrew.
Her art is about transcending her innermost expressions and turning the
resulting visuals into evocative objects in hopes of allowing her audience the
benefit of reconnecting, no matter how briefly, with the invisibles many of us
have forgotten.
Aje uses her consecrating visions as a way to express her connection with the
spirit and share that connection with others.

Tabou, born Charhyse Anjee Isabeaux Nhevharde Bailey, knew she was an artist
from the very moment she painted her two-year-old nails the color purple. She
grew up in Tacoma a native Hilltopian with a passion for music, theater, dance,
literature and social justice who spent most of her early years as a visual
artist immortalizing the faces of her family and friends.
For the past twelve years, Tabou has written poetry, fiction, and creative
non-fiction that call into focus deep rooted psycho-social issues of race,
gender, sexual orientation and class as they manifest within the emotional
dwellings of human beings, calling into scrutiny the validity of love, destiny,
identity and the influence of a higher power in various forms. For this reason,
the avatar "Semantic Sapphire" was created as a vessel to symbolize the healing
power of provocative words and journey readers through the intangible ebb and
flow of Black Womanhood.
