Hello All,
Its wonderful to see so many people interested in observation session and star parties.
We are planning 3 events in Jan. Here is the tentative schedule.

1. Star Party at Nikaya: 5th Jan 2013:
The Yoga Nikaya facility near Hosur has its own private observatory with a 14" telescope and lot more equipment. Our own Amar Sharma works there as an Astronomer. We are planning to have a star party there on 5th Jan.

2. Star Party at Kavalur: 11th, 12th Jan 2013:
Kavalur Observatory is maintained by Indian Institute of Astrophysics and has a 2 metre telescope along with many other small ones. We are in the process of acquiring permission from them to conduct a star party there. If we fail to get the permission, we'll shift the venue to Yelagiri.
Dr. Suresh Mohan has confirmed his presence for this event :)

3. Outreach at Koratagere: 19th Jan 2013:
We are planning to conduct an outreach program for rural school kids at Koratagere (near Tumkur) on 19th Jan following which, we can do some observation and come back.

I will post the details about the events as the planning progresses. We will then, formally accept registrations. Please mark your calendars for the same.

Regards,
Keerthi

Doc, which website do you refer to for weather report? I have been
going to both AccuWeather and 7timer - both of them have been pretty
inaccurate for me when I tracked both of them at hourly basis during
last few weekends. Both predicted rain and cloud in Coorg, and I had 2
clear nights out of 3 nights I stayed there.

Wondering which weather forecasting system can be accurate more than
two weeks in advance.. I find it best to refer to IMD site and see the
Satellite picture and wind direction - there are a lot of data on IMD
site, including sea surface temperature and wind direction, and also
it provides last 3 hours animation of Satellite picture.. and looking
at that you can make reasonably good guess about weather in very short
term. But then, planning in advance of 2 weeks cannot be done on basis
of that..

Regards,
Subhankar.

Subhankar,
the problem is entire south india is clouded for january and that is hurting me a lot,i checked from rameswaram to mysore.Gujarat is fantastic but gets too expensive to get there.Anyway do plan for mandapm camp for feb as the coast guard campus is 50 acres and i purchased a telescope for them so they are williing to completely switch off the lights, the road to rameswaram is amazing, 4 lane empty road takes 7  hrs from chennai at steady 120km, i touched 190 on several empty  streches and on that day it took 6hrs 15 min ; for u guys it is bangalore to madurai to rameswaram about 8hrs

Hi Akash

You don't need to have a telescope for most of our star parties. BAS
will have some of the BAS-owned telescopes on the field, and some
members will also be bringing their own telescopes.

Akarsh

Doc, nothing, just nothing can be said about South India these days. Its a nightmare change of weather pattern, let alone predict it hours in advance. I am the best witness to that. We have to start resting it (and our star parties) on Fate.

Keerthi,

I'm interested in kavalur. Only hold back is dr suresh mohan's prediction of cloudy nights. When is the last date of registration? Can I bring my own car and telescope? Should I make my reservations there? Leela

Madam, Kavalur is yet to grant us permission. We have sent the request to them. Earlier they have been very cooperative with us, allowing us half a dozen times for our star parties.

Lets hope our luck holds good still. Will let you know when they respond. There will be a formal registration process once BAS gets the information.

If they give, then yes members always have the option of driving down there themselves and bring their telescopes, like in every star party. And especially wih Kavalur there will be 2 batches divided for Friday and Saturday night, since Kavalur cant house more than 15 per batch. So it will be upto choice of members to choose a date.

Dont worry about weather predictions. As erratic weather is getting by the day, it has a chance of clearing out, unless there is a next cyclone coming in. I guess it should be clear for 12th night.

Okay. Kavalur authority replied back to me saying this time they have load on them due to some new telescope installation, and cant accomodate us.

So that means Kavalur is out, sadly. They have always been cooperative with us to let us host our star parties in the past, even when there has been load. We are thankful to Kavalur each time. But this time seems like BAS will have to organize star party at Yelagiri or some place where Doc Suresh and Chennai amateurs can also join.

We can hope and try Kavalur for Feb new moon star party.
