Dark Matter and Black Holes in the Universe

Abstract

Clusters of galaxies and more recently galaxies have convincingly shown, that most of matter is dark, and does not participate in nuclear reactions.  There are a number of proposal, what constitutes dark matter.  Almost all proposals involve new particles.  In some proposals black holes grow on dark matter.  One recent idea is that dark matter could be a new kind of neutrino, interacting even less than normal neutrons.  The dark matter particle may help to explain very early star formation in the universe, the very high velocities of some pulsars, the typical minimal mass of black holes in the centres of galaxies of a few million solar masses, and the minimum size galaxy found.  The spatial distribution of black holes in the universe traces out the distribution of dark matter.  I will outline the many challenges trying to understand the nature of dark matter.
