Hi

Look at this link:
https://mywebspace.wisc.edu/dlorenz/web/astronomy/lp2006/overlay/dark.html

This has the full light pollution atlas of the world overlayed over
Google maps. This makes it easy to find good observing sites.

Fortunately, the larger darkest sky regions in South India seem to be
in Karnataka. However, they all seem to be up in the ghats were
humidity can be a severe problem.

In any case, ignoring that problem, it looks like Keemale Estates
(near Karada, Coorg) isn't as awesome as I had thought it was.
According to this map, the following places are very dark:

1. Agumbe
2. Sharavati Valley region / Linganamakki reservoir [Note: Jog Falls
is not good! I have been there when there were clouds and the heavy
lighting at Jog Falls is a major detriment to observing. This can also
be seen clearly on the map.]
3. Areas between Kumta and Sirsi. I have friends from Kumta and Sagara
(which is near Linganamakki reservoir), and I wonder if they have
relatives nearby.
4. Idgundi (this seems familiar for some reason)
5. Tala Kaveri area

If anyone can look at the map and suggest observing locations near and
in the "transparent" (black / gray) regions, that would be a great
help!!

Regards
Akarsh

Thanks Akarsh! This is different from the Blue Marble link we usually get to see.

Thanks and Regards
Sathya

I really love this! I think it is better than the lightpollution.it
maps (more up-to-date). In fact, he says he updated it on the main
website of this map.

I found this from cleardarksky.com -> Light pollution map -> view as
Google maps or something like that.

I think this will be very useful. If someone tells me that Tadiandamol
is dark, I'm not going to believe them anymore :P

Akarsh

the blue marble (http://www.blue-marble.de/nightlights/2012) uses 2012 imagery while the link above says its a 2006 atlas.

The map ignores small city/town light pollution, and it creates artificial light pollution zone around(between towns too) by interpolating.

Other map I could see light pollution  from small towns

But nonetheless useful, has advantage of zooming to small details, which wasn't possible in previous one.

Agumbe is my idea of heaven, and I'd do anything to go there. But one thing to note is that it's also one of the wettest place in India and it's best to go in the summer if you want to observe. I've been to Tala-kaveri. Very nice place with a great view, but it's on a slope and so is the rest of the surrounding area. Might be difficult setting up equipment - not to mention carrying it!

responding on Akarsh's question:

on the close look there are places near tirupattur, chengam, etc in tamilnadu.
these may be the kavalur, yelagiri and arani sites suggested by doc.

this doesn't mean i want something close to chennai :), but these are much darker in this tool compared to madikkeri.

This is an excellent tool! I am excited to find gray regions easily accessible and not too far from Hyderabad. Thanks very much for sharing.

Venkat
