Hi everyone,

I recently came across photographing the night sky and am hooked! Are there any places where we can photograph good star trails or just the night sky in all its beauty, within driving distance from bangalore? Also, how safe are they?

I have tried a couple of spots near Nandi hills and some near Tumkur highway, but they have a lot of light pollution to get any good shots.

Regards,
Ullas

On top of nandi hills, there are rooms available. They are perfectly safe except for scorpions and such. I mean not excessively but still one needs to be careful. I have been there many times in the past.

On kanakpura side there are many farms. If you are looking for suggestions, you can send me an email.

And on bethmangla side there is another farm house. You need to book in advance and this place can accommodate large groups. Ultra safe and an urban farm. But suffers from a bit of stray lights at the horizon. But that is made up by the fact it has good toilets, high walls/electrified fencing be and at a less than two hour drive from KR puram.

Also, lot of BAS members go to some farm in koratagere. I have not been there so can't comment but someone on the list can help you with that.

Of course, am assuming u want something at a short distance from the city.

Anish

Hi Ullas,

I'll second Anish and the Doc's recommendations. You might also find it useful to consult a Light Pollution map.

The second one uses Bing maps, which (supposedly) aren't well-maintained, and are rumoured to be slightly inaccurate.

Best of luck,
K.

Thanks for the links Karthik.

I have been using the first light map link for a while to research places. The only fear I have is relying it on too much may end up me trespassing on someone's property. Or if it's open space stepping on something in the dark. :)

Ullas

Thanks for the suggestions. Would love to know some farms around kanakapura. Not able to view your email, can you send that please.

The bethmangla side farm sounds awesome. But if it's an urban farm, won't they have too many lights to drown out the sky? Or do they switch it off upon request? Would love to know more.

Ullas

Fair enough, the LP map isn't the /only/ resource you should rely on :)
However, it /can/ help you decide if a certain location is worth visiting or not.

Use it wisely :)

The farm owner at Bethmangala is also an astronomy enthusiast so he will switch off all the lights accordingly. We were there for the Lyrids meteor shower but the weather did not cooperate for most of the time except a brief window of an hour at about 4 am where it was clear. We got to see a few streaks and the MW was naked eye visible as well.
