| Hello cometeers, We know we will be having a (medium) bright comet in October - 103/P Hartley-2. For those like me, comfortable with Cartes software for printing out charts, the following is of use. Cartes does not enlist 103/P. For some reason 103/P was missed out from even IAU's Minor Planet page too. But now it appears its back here: http://minorplanetcenter.org/iau/Ephemerides/Comets/index.html This is the source file for CdC, but nowadays due to server not connecting, there is an error - http://www.cfa.harvard.edu/iau/Ephemerides/Comets/Soft06Cmt.txt Here are the steps for adding 103/P to your comet list. Please recall my earlier on mail giving detailed steps how to load Comet orbital elements in Cartes manually (if not, please retrieve from archives on main group page) In Cartes, go to : Preferences > Catalog & Object Parameters>Comets. Now you are going to add orbital elements, so be careful, as to not alter some other comet's data. Click on any comet. Just overwrite that name as "103P/Hartley-2" (you are actually not over-writing, but creating a new data set when you press Save at the end). Copy-paste the following parameters in boxes, as typed below: Equinox - 2010 / Perihelion T - 20101028.2670 / q - 1.058693 / e - 0.695125 / Peri - 181.2025 / Node - 219.7600 / Incl - 13.6184 / Mag H - 16.8 & G - 0.15 / Reference - MPC 70362 Then click on Save. 103/P will be added in serial order to the entire list. Go select it and on closing Cartes opt to "Save changes" option; you will have it enabled the next time. I believe this data should be pretty accurate. All this cumbersome process is for Cartes not being able to connect to server (atleast in Microsoft Windows) and 103/P data not being present in the source *.txt file mentioned above. Hope this helps. Share any queries you may have. Thanks. ************** Amar A. Sharma |
