Hi all,

I just bought a Celestron 130 eq and was wondering if there is any carry case/bag which could be used to make this telescope portable. I have no problem with the weight but to place those fragile parts in a secure manner.

Thanks,
Shekhar

Hi Shekar,

I do have a Celestron 130 EQ, and to carry around on a motor bike, I have a custom backpack made for carrying OTA, Tripod, and few light accessories, from a local bag repair shop.

The backpack looks like a hiking backpack, available at Decathalon. (minus the cost).

And to carry the counter weights and EQ mount, I have another custom hand bag, with inner lined with tarpaulin, with a internal wood plank base.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Vishwanath S K

Hi,
Tejraj (http://tejraj.com) sells custom made bags for telescopes and tripods. I purchased one for my celestron PS 114 telescope and found the quality quite good. A padded bag should cost you around Rs 1,500/-
Hope this  helps

Narendra

I don't know about the backpacks having that straps at Decathalon.

But mine does, I had asked the guy to stitch two straps with Velcro for fastening and hold the OTA and tripod.

I got a good deal for both the bags, done by a local bag repair shop, near my house at Ganganagar.

The handbag is of cuboid shape, of about 20 by 15 by 9 inches, that has a wooden plank at the base with two long screws protruding, for the counter-weights to prevent movement, and the EQ mount sits in-between and on top them.

Decathalon backpacks despite being expensive, are better designed to distribute weight at the waist, so that it will be more comfortable for a longer duration.

And the handbag would weigh around 7-8Kgs, should be comfortable for traveling, but not for hiking or trekking.

Thanks  Vishwanath,

Just some quick questions, how did you manage to hold the OTA and the tripod in place on the backpack of yours? Is there any belt or strap available in the Decathalon backback. I don't want the tube to be colliding with the tripod and stuff.
And where did you get this custom handbag made for holding EQ mount and the counter weights?
Also would it be suitable for travelling, because I solo travel a lot and I need to take the astromaster with me, just don't know how.

Regards,
Shekhar

Use a cricket kit. Line it with old quilt and you are good to go :)
