I think Skandagiri is a good place. I recommend you do a pilot trek during the day once. No need of guide and all. Trekking up all the way in the night with a telescope might be difficult, but there is a pretty open area after a short climb or even the base would suffice. The skies are pitch dark.

Alternately there is a Black Buck reserve at Jayamangali, 150 odd km from Bangalore. With Tumkur DFO permission you can stay overnight in the open reserve. Pitch dark guaranteed.

Yet another, Shettihalli Church Ruins, 30km off Hassan is a beautiful place. With water in front of you and the stars above, you wouldnt want to leave :)

Hi ,
I have long searched and wanted for a good observing place which is not too far but also has no compromise over the sky quality , me and few others have started travelling to a open ground in shivanahalli , it seems to be  safe , plus no need of carrying the instruments , it gives a decent 6 the mag sky with a Milky Way and is just 30 km from south Bangalore , I feel this is the best place comparing the distance and the sky quality , also the place is dry almost throughout the season ( it's not possible to tell the location using google maps , someone with prior knowledge of the place should accompany ), this place is way better than hosahalli , comparable to kortegere and a bit less darker than coorg . No permission is needed and anyone can go.

Sanath: is Shivanahalli south of Bannerghatta? If so, it can be located on GoogleMaps. Looks like a great place for a dark sky :)

Yes Anant, south of Bannerghatta, about 15km from the gates of the national Park. The North has city lights, East and South are best, West is also good. South is the best.

Thanks and Regards
Sathya

Hi,
I also found a places near choodasandra to be quite dark specially towards south and east. I'm trying to find out if it is a safe place. The visibility was also very good till the horizon on the south and east.

Saket, are you talking about Choodasandra between sarjapur rd and hosur rd? If yes, I am (pleasantly) surprised that it qualifies to be called dark towards south, given that it is almost adjoining electronics city in that direction...
