Hello,

I would like to know where I would get Olympus 10x50 binocular in Bangalore?

It is available online but I would prefer going to the shop and looking at it myself before buying.

Thanks,

Shrinivas

I went to the shops around Koramangala listed in Olympus site like reliance digital, Croma, Ezone, gkwale etc... Couldn't find any display model. Didn't go to fotofizzz in forum though.

I'd agree. Amazon also has a decent return policy.

Check your binoculars for collimation, and the usual set of things. If you find anything amiss, return it.

A good collimation check is described here:

I would ultimately may buy it online. But, as I told,  I wanted to first look at it and handle it myself. Thats why I wanted the shop name.

Good luck. It's not very easy to find a store with display pieces that you can try out. If you do find one, please post here - I'm sure other people will also be interested in this information.

Liked I mentioned earlier nobody seemed to have binos. Cromo was having their own bin and I didn't like it.
But as Karthik mentioned, amazon has decent return policy. you can try for 10 days and return if you dont like.
I think that time is sufficient. you are not bound to keep it unless you like it.

Hey Nazir,

Looks like you skipped the one shop in Koramangala that actually does the binocular you are looking for. Whizz in Forum Mall does have several Olympus, Meade and Nikon camera on display in their shelves and they let you have a look at them in hand as well in the store. Not sure if there is much value looking through it in their tiny store other than peeping out of the glass into the mall. You will get a good feel for the build quality of the binoculars as well have a look at the lens coatings.

Their prices do tend to be on the higher side though. I would think amazon would be a cheaper option out as recommended by others here.

All the best.

Aditya Ravi

Oh. I just couldn't go there though it was in my list. I will make a point to go there especially to look at the Meade ones.

Thanks Aditya.

I purchased the Olympus 10x50 DSP I from Amazon last week. One might also want to purchase a tripod adapter (https://goo.gl/3iczFm).

Are the collimation screws in the same position as marked here: https://goo.gl/ZYATRT, https://goo.gl/EYZmT9?

Note that it suffers from astigmatism (elongation of points of light) from about two-thirds from the center. This is not very noticeable in daytime use (the edges blur out), but is prominent when viewing the stars. As long as you keep your FOV close to the axis, it's a pretty serviceable instrument.

Thanks,
-Shashi

This is interesting! My Olympus actually has pin-point stars except close to the edge of the FOV. Either I got lucky buying it, or their quality control isn't what it used to be :)

As an aside, of the 3 pairs of binocs that I own (Olympus 10x50, Celestron SkyMaster 20x80, Lunt Magnesium 16x70), the Celestron has the worst optics. The Lunt is a pleasure to use in no small part due to the excellent optics it sports. (FWIW, there extra aperture of the Celestron does have its uses once in a while.).

This tripod adaptor seems to be friendly with your wallet: https://www.amazon.in/gp/product/B011ECBDFS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It fits perfectly for Olympus 10x50 DPSI.

It's usually a little tricky with the cheaper adaptors. They have more plastic
in their construction than I'm comfortable with.

I bought a few off AliExpress a couple of years ago, for roughly Rs. 100
a piece, just to see what they were like. All of them broke in a few months time.

The all-metal L-adaptors, on the other hand, have lasted several years with no
troubles whatsoever. I have a couple of L-adaptors like this one:

I guess it should not be too difficult to get something like this fabricated here;
I too am loath to pay more than what I think they're worth :)

Slightly tangential - but my personal opinion is that it doesn't matter. Here's why:
The trouble with mass-market optics is that it is difficult to guarantee quality.

Ergo, a shop or a brand that works for one person *might not necessarily* work
for everybody else.

Here's a procedure that usually works for most people:

1. Choose a retailer with a good return policy. Offline or online, it doesn't matter - what matters is the (presence of a) return policy.
2. Buy the optics - binoculars, in this case.
3. Test the optics.
For binoculars, you want to make sure that
     (a) The coatings are intact
     (b) The optical surfaces are scratch-free
     (c) There is either a lack of CA or you're comfortable with the CA that exists.
IMHO, CA doesn't matter too much with deep-sky objects, but will definitely matter with bright objects.
     (d) They are well-collimated.

   References that might help:

4. If the binoculars fail any of the tests above, return them and claim a refund.

Best,
K.

Thanks for the pointers Karthik.

Is the presence of CA in binoculars detrimental to astronomical viewing? I would have guessed but for a bright moon, it might be irrelevant (through it's always good to have a less aberrant pair).

Thanks,

I'm no expert, so please take this with a grain of salt :)

My thoughts are the same as what you've written - CA should not matter
when you're viewing deep-sky objects. It *does* show up when you're looking
at something like Venus or Jupiter, say, or even a bright star. (Source: I own
a Celestron 20x80 with absolutely horrendous CA.). However, the binocs
deliver decent views of deep-sky objects.

That said - I *also* own a good pair of binocs with minimal CA. The important
thing here is that the better pair has good optics - lack of CA is just a benefit of
having good optics (This pair is a Lunt Magnesium 16x70).

The images in the Lunt are very sharp, and have much more contrast.
I only pull out the 20x80s if I feel the need for the extra 10mm of aperture -
which is not very often :)

The difference between a good pair of binocs and a not so good pair is very
evident under good skies, and not so evident under city skies. Also, mounting
the binocs helps a lot. My preferred binocular mount is the parallelogram mount
from Aperture Telescopes. Other folks on the list have had success with other
mounting techniques as well.

I guess that's enough rambling on (and off) the topic :)

K.
