Hello Everyone,

I have bought Celestron 90LCM Computerised Refractor Telescope in London Uk.
I want to take it back to India so Can anyone please let me know how can I take it back?

Can I take as a cabin baggage with my Laptop bag in flight? Or if I put fragile and checked in then will it be safe?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Amol

Amol,

You should carry the optical tube with you as it is not safe to check-in. But the length of the tube is 27inches which could be more than what is allowed as cabin baggage. If you can carry it in a soft duffel bag, you will be able to sneak it in. I was able to bring a refractor recently but the length was about 20 inches

Good luck

Jagan

hi
Only option is to bring it as Check in Luggage. I would suggest it to declare Fragile -- contains GLASS--at 3-4 places on the packing. Use original packing material and tightly pack it. Add some more bubblesheet around it. This should be fine.
At best, you can add a wooden frame around it to avoid any direct external impact.

Thanks

I'd recommend against checking-in the OTA. Even if it is marked Fragile, there's no guarantee that the OTA will survive the journey unscathed.

Carrying the OTA with you is far safer.

I agree with Karthik. The "Fragile" sticker doesn't mean anything,
really. If you really want to check it in nevertheless, make sure it
is very well-packed. I have recently shipped a mirror by ground
shipping with success using the "foam-brick" idea, see e.g.
http://www.loptics.com/intheshop/shop21.html. I think if you use foam
packing in a hard case, it should be fine. There are these "Pelican"
cases, which are very expensive, but very rugged. Friends have had
significant success transporting expensive telescopes by air freight
using them.

Akarsh

I got a nextstar 8se in flight about 7 years ago. I brought the optical tube in a duffle bag, and rest I checked in. Strangely not a question was asked by anyone at any checkpoint.

Thanks Guys.. .Yeah, it is 27 Inch. I am just thinking that we can take Guitar or bongo with us in cabin bag then why not optical tube.

For a domestic flight, I was told that guitar is not allowed to be
carried, unless it is a very small one (less than 32 inches IIRC). And
for checking in fragile packages I had to pay extra.

The rules might differ between carriers, so it might be best to call
their customer care.
