I know there are a few Braga researchers in this group.  Has anyone worked back the ancestry of Charles Braga Jr who the Braga Bridge in Fall River, MA is named after?  He is the son of Carlos R. "Charles" Braga and Maria Rosaria Cabral.

My cousin and I have distant DNA matches through descendants of Carlos' parents, Francisco de Braga and Maria da Encarnacao, so I thought I would follow the line backward thinking it might hit Damiao de Braga and Barbara Faria.

The line goes to Capelas.  I've gotten to the ancestors  Manoel de Braga born ca 1730, Capelas who 1st m. before 1755 to Ignez da Gloria (born in Santa Maria Island) and 2nd m. 11 Feb 1781 to Quiteria de Jesus of Capelas.  Charles of Bridge fame descends from the second marriage.  I have found a child born to Manoel and Ignez in 1755, but their marriage and the names of Manoel's parents elude me.

I haven't found a connection to the other de Braga's. Perhaps I've made the wrong assumption that our connection is through the de Braga line. Perhaps John Roias or someone else knows if this line meets up with the de Braga's of Maia?

Thanks,
Melody

Good morning, Mel!

I have Damiao (aka Dimas Braga), of Fenaes de Ajuda, [son of Antonio Braga and Maria Pimentel de Simas, paternal grandson of Manuel Pereira Dutra and Ana Ferreira and maternal grandson of Manuel de Simas and Maria de Pimentel ] married in Achada Grande on 1 Jun 1720 to Barbara de Frias, of Maia, daughter of Manuel.....and  Maria Faria. I do not see any descendants in Capelas. Dimas and Barbara are ancestors of the Nobel laureate, Craig Mello. Some twenty years ago I worked on Charles Braga's lineage, focusing on the male line. I was only able to go mack to Manuel Braga and Quiteria de Jesus. Charles Braga's (of Braga Bridge fame) niece married my first cousin.

Sorry I can't be of more help but I will keep my eyes open.

Hi John. You must have missed the posting I made a few years ago where I discovered the baptism of Damiao de Braga in Fenais da Ajuda. He is filho de Antonio Moniz de Braga or Moniz de Sa and Maria de Sousa, casou, 17, March, 1689, in Fenais da Ajuda. I am somewhat familiar with the Braga's of Capelas and they come from Ilha de St Maria.

Here is Manuel and Ines:

SSPD casamentos, page 18, married 03-11-1753

I will send Mel a private email.

JR, (John Roias)

Thanks, John.

Let me know if you discover the trunk of the Capelas Bragas. It looks like Ines da Gloria was from Vila do Porto.
