I closely follow things on endogamy since we came from islands that heavily intermarried. Leah Larkin, PhD, aka The DNA Geek, has made heat maps of various endogamous populations and is trying to assign degrees of endogamy to the various groups, ranging from mild to moderate to strong. I'd like our DNA included in her study.

How to participate:

1) You need 2, 3, or 4 GRANDPARENTS to be Azorean OR Madeiran.

2) You need your DNA at MyHeritage or have transferred to MyHeritage. Ancestry instructions will come in a couple of days in another email (not sure I can get the tool to work on Windows). So, for My Heritage, log in, go to your "DNA Matches" (labeled 1) and then go to the 3 vertical dots (labeled 2):
image.png

3) Once you click the 3 vertical dots, a new menu drops down. Click on Export entire DNA Matches list (circled)

image.png

4) Once the list is emailed to you, just forward it to me. Include the name of the testee and how many Azorean or Madeiran grandparents the person has. You can do this for all kits that you manage, just as long as the testee has 2, 3, or 4 Azorean or Madeiran grandparents.

I will recode the name of the testee, strip the identifying information and send only the "Total cM shared", "Number of shared segments", and "Largest segment (cM)" as that is all that is needed for Leah's study.

Not on MyHeritage yet? I'll send another email on that.

Just a reminder that we'd like more DNA data to figure out how much endogamy (intermarriage) exists in the Azores and Madeira compared to other endogamous populations. I'm doing a great job getting the information from MY own cousins, but we need a good cross section of ALL Azorean islands as well as Madeira. Please try to do this soon. Here is the original message (and I'm working on getting the tool that I need to convert Ancestry DNA's results).

Cheri,
Both of my maternal grandparents were born here.  ALL (with one exception) of their parents were born in the Azores.  With my ggrandmother who is the exception, her father and mother were from Fayal.  So all these folks were Azorean.  Does birth here eliminate them?

Hi Tim,

Although Leah asked for grandparents, I'm sure she'll take 3 out of 4 maternal greats. I'll be sure make it crystal clear to her on your file. Please go ahead and send me the file under a new email. Thanks!

Hi Cheri,

Like Tim, my grandparents were born here.  My great grandparents, paternal, where born in the Azores.  I know that my grandparents were cousins.  I think they were 5th cousins.  Should I send you my file?

Hi Luis,

Your mom's would be more useful, but send yours too, for a comparison. I can send you the transfer directions. I think I sent them under a new thread. I'll just forward it to you.

Someone asked me if they should send the data from all of their first cousins who share the same set of grandparents. Now I can't find your email (I'm suffering from lack of sleep because of spammy text messages at 3:30 in the morning, waking me up). YES, go ahead and send the files for your first cousins who share the same grandparents.

Oh good grief, I think I misunderstood.
Cheri, my Azores ancestors are second great grandparents so you likely won’t want the dna matches I sent.  My apologies for wasting your time,
Rebecca

So you have 1 grandparent who is 50% Azorean? I'll ask Leah if that will work. If not, wait for me to figure out the tool for Ancestry and you can send your dad's instead.

Cheri,
My maternal Azores ancestors:
Manuel S Rebelo Avila born Ribeira Seca, 3/18/1887, Grandfather
Jose de Sousa Rebelo born Sao Miguel, 11/2/1848, Great Grandfather
Manuel de Sousa Rebelo Jr. born Sao Miguel, 5/6/1819,third great grandfather
Manuel de Sousa Rebelo Sr. born Sao Miguel, 7/26/1789, fourth great grandfather.

Wanted to share this with you before I proceed. Do not have MyHeritage DNA but do have FTDNA.
Is it worth me getting MyHeritage or can I wait until further work can be done using FTDNA?
Thanks.

Hi Phil,

According to the tree you posted on FTDNA, BOTH of your maternal grandparents are Azorean (with the other 2 grands being from the continent). The 2 Azorean grands qualify you for the study. Now to get you to the right platform.

Is it worth it to transfer to My Heritage? Well, it's free to transfer and get your matches for free (the tools cost $29 if you want them...Or you can wait to see if they put them on sale at the end of the year). It's like fishing for cousins in another pond (well, company). I helped someone this weekend transfer over. His top matches are 2 sisters. At least one lives in his town and he said they are NOT related by blood. Well, guess what? They are some type of 2nd cousins, so now he's getting a hold of her to figure out the connection. And this whole time he didn't know. My dad also got a match on My Heritage only that was not in any other company's database. Same with my mom's DNA. So yes, it is worth it fish for cousins in other ponds. Then you can contribute to the endogamy study.

Leah only uses data from My Heritage and Ancestry. I don't think the 23 and Me export gives her the data she needs to do the calculations. And I think the file from FTDNA is not a spreadsheet or .xls file. So you'll need to do the free transfer to My Heritage. I can resend the directions if you like.
