Season's greetings!

What does the abbreviation of Isabel's surname mean? Miranda?

"(...) Manuel Alvares filho de Antonio Alvares e de sua mulher Isabel de M... moradores na freguesia..."

The screenshot attached to this email is from a record dating back to 1671, in Santa Cruz, Lagoa.

Thanks!

Carlos

Hi Joe,

Thanks for your suggestion, but I don't think Misericórdia was a surname, and I have not seen devotional names in 17th century records. I've found a marriage record of Antonio Alvares and Isabel de Oliveira, but the abbreviation clearly starts with an M.

Cheers,

Carlos

Joe, here is the link to the record:

The same abbreviation is used to refer to two men ("... Andre de Miur.a filho de Manuel Miur.a...") on the record at the top of the page. I am wondering if the abbreviation means Moreira.

Moreover, if you keep flipping the pages of the late 17th wedding records of Santa Cruz, Lagoa, you will not find a single devotional name, and all women have surnames.

Then again, I am not an expert in 17th century Portuguese Palaeography, so my guess is as good as yours.

Thanks,

Carlos

The bride is Isabel Vieira (V^a). I don't see Miranda.
