hello again,

i was just wondering how/if it is possible to track when people immigated to the azores?

i am looking for when my 3rd great grandmother, her two children and mother in law went back to terceira after immigrating to brazil. i believe her husnad dies at some point between oct 1895 and april of 1897 at this point she is already on the island of terceira.

any help would be greatly apprecatied!

thanks,

natasha (:

Hi Natasha,

I know of no sources that track inbound passengers to the Azores.

But if you know the husband died between Oct 1895 and Apr 1897, then I'd go to the freguesia and start looking through the obitos.
Good luck,

unfortunately, he died in brazil and there are no real obituaries from what i have been told. thats why i was looking for inbound passangers because the family story is that he died and then his wife came back to the island of terceira. i have hit a bit of a road block with my research about him.

my next search is, maybe they announced his death in terceira through a newspaper or something like that.

thanks,

natasha

I did find some good news on the https://saojorgegenealogy.org/ website resources.  Their "Sharefile" has an index of probate inventory processes.  It does show that Manuel's inventory was just the third one in 1897 and it was Lucinda that did the inventory.  It is located at the Angra archive Maço 991, judicial order #14.  Based on others I have looked at, it will have his death information, list of heirs, and and inventory of his property.  Here is an image of the index:

I was planning to visit the archive this week so I'll take this information with me and see what I can find.

Hi Bill,

Thank you so much for reaching out and helping with this!! I have been trying to find when he died for the last 6 months or so. His family has been quite the mystery to my family.

Hi Natasha, I made it to the Angra Archive today.  It turns out your 3GGF did not die in Brazil, but in Lisbon, Portugal on 1 Nov 1896.  Attached is a picture I took of the obit information from his inventory.  It says an official from Sao Jose Hospital is Lisbon certifies the following from record number 1773, in registry book number 121 (sorry but I do not know how to find this book in Lisbon):

On 1 Nov 1896 at 2AM at the "entrada de cama de observações" at the Sao Jose Hospital dead was Manuel Ferreira Drumonde Coelho, 39 years old, married with Lucinda Augusta Simões, of unknown profession; natural of Angra do Heroismo and resident of Rua do ?Tanqueiro?, #12, second floor in the parish of Santa Maria Magdalena; son of Manuel Drumonde and Rosa Mariana Coelho Drumonde.

In another part of the book it listed his living children as Florencio, age 8 and Bibiana, age 6 (see attachment "...filhos"

Also attached are a photo of the cover pages that shows his widow is performing the inventory in Angra and a picture of the whole book to show how massive it is.  Most that I've seen were a few dozen pages.  This one is the size of a dictionary, most of which was beyond my capabilities.  Perhaps he owned a lot or comes from a long line of heirs.  Ferreira Drumonde is an important name in Sao Sebastiao.

I do not know how long they had been in Lisbon or if they were intending to live there or just passing through to the Azores.  Either way, the obit says they resided in Santa Maria Magdalena (Lisbon) and we know his wife returned to Terceira after his death.

Hi Bill,

Thank you so much for doing this for us! I am going to post in some other groups to see if anyone can help me take more pictures and/or translate some of it. My family never knew any of this information; my sister and I have been looking for answers about them for nearly two years at this point. We are in Canada, so we can't see this ourselves, but hopefully, we will find someone willing to do a deeper dive for us.

Thank you,

natasha(:
