Say...would you be willing (for a fee) to write them a letter for me???  Their grandson used to translate but he has moved to another Island, Flores I think...:-(

Hello,

My name is Margaret Moniz Ephrom. I am new to your
Azores google group and would like to be included on
your list of people to purchase your book. My
ggrandfather was Jose Moniz, born abt. 1865, in
Ribeira Grande, Sao Miguel. He married Ermalinda
Souza, born abt. 1875, also from Sao Miguel. The only
documents I have are US census reports and some US
church records. After many stops and starts, and
trying to separate fact from fiction, my research in
the Azores is just beginning.

Thank you,
Peggy(Margaret) Ephrom

Could there be a connection? My ggrandfather, Antonio de Sousa b. abt.1867
in Riberia Grande. He had brothers Jacinto, Jose, Manuel and a sister Maria
da Assuncao b. abt. 1875. I met Maria's ggranddaughter, Suzanne Merryfield,
my cousin, from this group back in November.

There was another connection of Sousa's from Achadinha, NS do Rosario,
Riberia Grande who married on the female side of Antonio de Sousa's father,
Adriano de Sousa Calouro born in Riberia Grande. Her name was Maria
Florinda daughter of Lourenco Jose de Sousa and Luzia Rosa.

This is a great idea. Does anyone know if there are
such books from the other islands? They ought to make
them for baptism records, too!

Does anyone know about Portuguese census records?

Hi Marlene,

I don't understand what your first paragraph is in reference to.  Could you please elaborate more?

The "Portuguese Census" records don't exist.  There is something similar called "Confession Rolls."  I think (if memory serves me correctly) that the Confession Rolls were taken around Easter time.  It lists a family.  There was no filming of these and I believe that trying to locate some confession rolls for your village in the time period you want would be spotty at best.  Others who know more about confession rolls will respond.

Sincerely,
Cheri Mello

Confession rolls? An interesting idea, I would like
to hear more...

What I asked about, Cheri, was in reference to the
Marriage Book that the list is talking about, it lists
the marriages in one island, I wondered if such books
were available for the other islands.

About the Portuguese census records... I've read Sao
Jorge Rol de 1875 and Sao Jorge Rol de 1900 on
Maggie's webpage, she said they were given to her &
that it was just for the area around Ribeira Seca. I
wondered if these were done in other areas, if so,
where I could read through others to find my own
relatives. These "Rol" contained lists like
door-to-door, with the names of the people living in
each house, their relationship to the one listed as
head of household, all the ages, & their occupations -
which would be a wealth of information about the
people you were searching for. Anybody every hear of
them?

I believe those are the confession rolls you are describing.

Yes, Marlene is describing the confession rolls.  From my understanding, the priest did not go door to door.  It was a requirement to go to confession before Easter and so the counts of the families were done when the person came to confession.  So the person went to the church and this info was collected then.  But I don't know the availabilty of these confession rolls. I have an idea that not too many still exist.

About the books.....once you get into an area or island, you start to know about the books that are available to help.  Since most of my research focuses on Sao Miguel, I know about sources for that island: Saudades da Terra (book 4; I think the other books cover some of the other islands); Rodrigo Rodrigues; Carlos Machado.  There's the Familias Antiguas de Povocacao.  I have Ernesto do Canto's marriage index for Achada only.  I did copy a few portions of some of the other freguesias he did (where I also have ancestors).  I made my own marriage index for Ribeira das Tainhas, covering 1884-1900 only.  Al Ramos has indexed some parishes on Flores, Terceira, and Sao Miguel.  Most of these have been filmed by the FHC.  There's a book on the families of Terceira (the name escapes me at the moment).  I think Joao Ventura made a book of some vital records on Terceira.  George Pacheco just finished his Bretanha book ( S.Miguel island).  There's the new Flores book.  There's another Flores book with "Looking Glass" in the title (in Portuguese).

Hawaii has it's own set.  There's the Bob de Mello book and the Knowlton book.  There's Portuguese Hawaiian Memories (just been reprinted) and Melody Lassalle has created a more through index for that book.

So once you get into the correct area, you will see what is available.  Most of these texts are in Portuguese only, though, but they are not too hard to follow.

Hope this helps!
Cheri

Thanks, Cheri. There is a lot of information out
there, and people looking for it, too. I hope that I
can make some contribution to the Portuguese
descendents from the places that my ancestors hail
from. Do the Portuguese communities allow you to copy
their records, as the LDS church has done? I think it
is a most worthy cause.

Thank you for explaining the Confession Rolls, I would
sure be interested in seeing some of places where my
ancestors lived - Manadas & Topo, San Jorge, & Sao
Roque, Pico. Takes a whole new spin on one's "Easter
Duties"!

Hi Marlene,

This might be more than you wanted to know....

Technically, the LDS does not do the filming.  It's the Genealogy Society of Utah, or the GSU.  The GSU goes out and makes legal contracts with other governments to film their records.  They become copyrighted and there are certain restrictions and regulations that must be followed.  Boxes of film now come with warnings printed on them.

Within the Azorean governement, they have created the "Center for Knowledge of the Azores."  Under this, they have the "Core of Genealogy Studies."  I'm doing loose translation here, so the titling might be a little off.  They are working to put all the records online.  I think that they gave the whole genealogy part to just Joao Ventura (on this list).  I think this is a project that will take years to complete.  They want to put the marriage dispensions online (never been filmed), "passaportes" or the ship's lists of passengers leaving the Azores (never been filmed by the GSU) and the "De Genere" records which was the paperwork that a priest submitted including a family tree showing that they weren't Jewish.  Again, these have been unfilmed.  I'm not sure if all the baptisms, marriages, and deaths that we order and read on film will appear online or not.  Joao has started with the "Passaportes" and some are begining to appear online.  You can access all this info here: http://pg.azores.gov.pt/drac/neg/

Cheri Mello

Dr. Miguel Soares da Silva has compiled all of the Marriages of Santo António além Capelas and also searched through all existing records (deaths, births, confession lists, etc) for those periods when the marriages are missing in order to tie up loose ends. For example, if a marriage record is missing for John Smith and Mary Jones (c. 1628) but their daughter Suzie was buried in the grave of her grandfather Josiah Smith, and you know that Josiah Smith was married Abigail Shoesmith and have their ancestry, you've effectively overcome the dead end created by the missing marriage record. That book is called "A Reconstruction of the Families of Santo António Além Capelas." Unfortunately, these books are located only in a handful of library reference rooms in Southeastern Massachusetts and in the collection of the American Portuguese Genealogical and Historical Society at the Taunton Public Library. I have personal copies of both.

I was fortunate enough to attend a portuguese genealogy workshop and a lady there had been to the Faial and when she asked about the confession rolls, was given them and she had them photocopied.  I don't think this would happen now, since it has been several years.  She found my grandfather's family back to my ggggrandfather and we could see the progression of the family and when each came to the USA.  I was just lucky that she was in the parish that my family resided.  The rolls told the address, who was living in the house and the age of the person.

George,

Is this book in English?  IF I get the MRIN #, is that the way I can order copies of the actual records?  I'm a little confused about exactly how I can use the book, I guess.   I'm interested in it but I'm concerned that it might be in Portuguese.   Please let me know.
