Hi,

Bartolomeu da Costa was born in the mid 1640s according to this death record on March 27, 1712 in Ribeira Seca:

He married Maria da Silva, who was a widow, in Ribeira Seca, Ribeira Grande on June 23, 1683:

The marriage record states that Bartolomeu da Costa was from Ponta Garça and no other identifier (no birth records available before 1675)

Around that time, Rodrigo Rodrigues mentions a Bartolomeu da Costa, who in 1677, as an adult, donated his share of his mother's inheritance to his niece (text below). His mother was named Margarida da Costa.

Bartolomeu da Costa's first-born child was Margarida da Costa:

Other than the location (Ponta Garça), age ( his potential parents, António de Roi Frois and Margarida da Costa/ da Costa Carneiro/ ou de Roi Borges,  married around 1646, according to RR, and all his potential siblings married in the early 1880s, according to parish records), and the fact that his first-born child was his mother's namesake, I have nothing else to support this hypothesis.

Does anyone have evidence that the Bartolomeu da Costa that RR mentions below never married (e.g., became a priest or something)?

Here's a translation from RR's book:
"António de Roi Frois, who lived in Ponta Garça after his marriage (Note N.º 5) (See Note N.º 27.º, Chapter 78.º), married  Margarida da Costa ou de Roi Borges (Cap.º 78.º § 17.º, N.º 7) around 1646.
They had:
3 -João de Frois, which follows:
3- Bartolomeu da Costa, (See Note N.º 3). *Its actually 5
3- Margarida da Costa Carneiro (Vide Nota N.º 5). Married Ponta Garça on 1.13.1676 Captain José da Costa Simãs (Cap.º 140.º § 1.º, N.º 4).

Note N.º 5 - António de Roi Frois (N.º 2 § 1.º)
"On July 14, 1677, in Vila Franca, Bartolomeu da Costa, of legal age, son of António Roi Frois, living in Ponta Garça, makes a donation of all his movable and immovable property from the inheritance of his mother Margarida da Costa and those that came to belong to him from his father António de Roi Frois in favor of his niece Margarida, daughter of José Costa Simas and Margarida da Costa, who is represented in this deed by her father José da Costa Simas, also a resident of Ponta Garça (notes by Manuel Franco de Aguiar, Book of 1671 to 1678)."

Is this too much of wild guess?

I'd appreciate your opinion.

Thanks,

Carlos
