Hello! New person here. My husband is a Silveria, and his father's
name was Antone Silveria. However, when dad needed his birth cerficate
for social security, one couldn't be found under that name. It was
found on his baptism records he was an Avila. He was born in San Jose,
Ca. in 1894. Turns out Antone's father, who was born in Sao Jorge (sp)
Azores, circa 1845, name on headstone in Calvary cemetery is listed as
"J.A.S. Avilla", but he went by the name of Silveria, which could well
be the "S" in his name. He died in San Jose Nov 29, 1903. Can't find
any record of that so far in vitals. Haven't contacted cemetery yet.
Used to think the spelling of Silveria was a mistake somewhere along
the way from the more common spelling, Silveira. But I was wrong,
there are quite a few Silverias out there! I just can't seem to find
out how we are related yet. The true family name, as the remaining
generations understand it, was d'Avila or Avila (Avilla, Avella).
There are a lot of them, but I am not having any luck connecting so
far. Our Avilas/Silverias were mainly on the east side of San Jose.
Antone was first generation born here, my husband, Robert Antone
Silveria, the second. Anything vaguely familiar to anyone yet? Info
bit: Antone's father was 58 when he died, supposedly of gangrene from
a wound on his leg inflicted by a horse. He refused to have his leg
amputated. He also was supposed to have done some whaling before
settling in San Jose.
Thanks for any response or help. Candee Silveria

I don't recall off the top of my head what county San Jose is in.  But here's an incomplete pre-1905 CA death index: http://www.rootsweb.com/~cabf1905/

Yes, you spelled Sao Jorge correctly.  You may find "Antone" (what it sounds like to an American) spelled as Antonio in the Portuguese records.  You will find Silveira is very common (like Smith, Jones, and Miller).

Thank you for such a quick response! I have been looking through
Maggie's census 1875, for Sao Jorge. Fascinating. Feel like we just
might make some progress here. The daughters want to know about their
ancestry. good for them!

Hello Candie,
I might be able to help also. I have lots of family
from Sao Jorge and with both the Avila name as well as
the Silveira name. I also have Avila's from Pico. You
might want to check out my web site at
www.silveiratree.iznot.com and look under the Silveira
side. I have a list of names of the people in my tree.
Let me know if you find anything that matches. I also
have other info from Ribeira Seca I could check for
you. I will take time tomorrow to see if we connect
also.

Hello Candee,

My name is Emil Silveira and my father, two brothers and one sister, were all born in Sao Jorge. My father was Manuel Henriques Silveira, his mother Eduarda born on Nov 03, 1885 in Sao Salvador, Horta, Faial was the Silveira. His father was Francisco P Avila who was from Almoxarife,Faial. They had their Silveira children in Sao Jorge. It would be helpful for you to include the name of the wife when ever you look for someone. The children often carried the mother's surname as their last name until around the 1900's. In my father's case, he was one of several illegitimate children fathered by Francisco P Avila. Others were Lopes and Vargas or Vargas Lopes. This may help you to understand the variations that could be possible while doing research during this early time frame.

Candee: Have you tried looking in the SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS for an obituary
for J. A. S. Avilla or Antone Silveria for 29 Nov 1903? You can also try
looking at the
Sacramento State Library. They have death books, groom books, bride books.
I think
that the death books start in early 1900s.

San Jose is in Santa Clara County.  As an aside, Alameda County was carved from part of Santa Clara and part of Contra Costa Counties in 1853.  Celeste, Hayward, CA

Dear Candee,
My great grandfather was Adriano Jose da Silveira - His wife Anna
Jacinta (do Coracao de Jesus). He was born 1824 on Pico. They were
baptized in the Santo Antonio church . Their son Manuel Jose Adrian as
he was known in the US, born 1869 also on Pico, came to San Jose, CA in
1884. He and wife Marianna Paulina da Silva, daughter of Joao Silviera
da Rosa and Maria Rita lived in the Willow Glen area of San Jose where
3 of their 7 children were born. They are buried in Oak Hills
Cemetery, San Jose.

Family memories are getting fired up--J.A.S. Avila came to CA probably
prior to 1870, and he was sponsored by a Silveria (correct spelling),
could have been relatives on his mother's side(?)and took the name
Silveria. Met bride to be here, last name Nunes, they think first name
was Mary or Marie, Maria. They had 10-12 children, I can account for
ten names, and son Antone was second to last born in 1894, so they
would have married c. 1870 or so, in San Jose area. She (or both of
them, but as a widow, she owned LOTS of property in Berryessa. Willed
to the kids, contested, everybody lost out to back taxes and lawyers.
The children of JAS Avila/Nunes are John, Joseph, Manual, Frank,
Andrew, Antone (father, b. 1894), Alford, Mary, Annie, and Bella
(Belle). Alford had two sons, Lester and Mel. Everybody seemed to be
baptized at St. Patrick's in San Jose, as far as we know. None of this
is confirmed by me yet, but I'm getting closer!
