Dear Al,

Thank you for your reply.  I am sorry but I am way behind in answering my e-mail and I'm still trying to get caught up.  You are right,. it seems pretty evident that the surnames of Machado and Soares quite often became Marshall and Sears, also Sawyer sometime after coming to the states..

My grandfather was born Jose in 1881 in Lajes, Pico.  He was the only child of Jose Machado (b. 1855, Lajes, Pico).  I don't know what happened to his father except that he died sometime while my grandfather was a child.  I'm not even sure of where he died, in the Azores or in the United States.  I heard that he died in a fire.  My grandfather immigrated with his mother, Mariana,  to the USA when he was about three years old.  They went to Massachusetts and lived in Cambridge and Sommerville.  He also traveled out west to Califronia with his mother at various times up around the Gilroy area..  His mother remarried to a man named Avila from the Azores.  She did return to Pico where she died.  My grandfather made several trips back over to the islands to visit and also made trips over there concerning some property that he inherited. as an adult from his grandfather, Francisco on Pico.  He used his name Jose Machado Soares whenever he returned to the islands.  In the USA he changed his surname to Sawyer (Soares).  Later, he dropped that and angelized his name to Marshall (Machado).  He was naturalized under Sawyer and married under Sawyer.  The first few children were born under Sawyer, the last few which included my father were born under Marshall.  So, the family name was really Machado.

So, there you have my paternal grandfather's line for as far back as I have been able to trace.  I wish that I could see some connections with your family, but haven't been able to recognize any at this point.  I thank you so much for your time and for your response.  Good luck in your quest to find your relatives.  Adeus,....Marie Pleasant    seek...@aol.com

Marie, thanks for your note. I have just returned from an extended absence as well. One of these days, I will get to the church in Norton, MA and see if there are indications in those records as to the island that our MACHADO & SOARES families came from.
Good luck to you as well.
Al Rose
