>>>Hi. I tried to respond to the AZORES-GEN and it would not accept my
post. I am new to this list and I guess I am not fully subscribed. Maybe
you can forward my ship information to the list . This ship info is from
my trip to the Azores when I was 13. Manny

When at age 13, I went to the Azores in 1935 the Italian line had the
Rex, Roma, Conte Grande, Vulcania and the Saturnia that stoped at Ponta
Delgada on the way to Boston. We left from Boston on the Conte Grande
and returned on the Vulcania. I thought that most of these ships were
sunk in the Mediterranean Sea during WWII but maybe not all were sunk.

Good day to all ,

My Father came to Canada in 1953 with many other Azoreans to work in
Canada during the Canadian economic expansion during the 1950's & 60's .
The vessel carrying the new immigrants was of Italian origin and
travelled between the Azores archipelago to pick up groups of would-be
immigrants that had passed the qualifying means tests for industrial &
farm workers that Canada needed ...

I am trying to get the vessel names and their passenger lists for the
year 1953 for vessels calling at Halifax , Canada pier 21
http://www.pier21.ca/ with origin in the Azores . Any information is
welcomed .. Thanks in advance for your input !

The book "Imigrantes Portugueses - 25 Anos no Canada" by Domingos Marques
and Joao Medeiros states that 20 men from S. Miguel left for Lisbon on 21
Apr 1953, aboard the Lima. They were joined by a contigent of continentals
and left for Canada aboard the Saturnia arriving at Halifax on 13 May 1953.
Those I believe were the only Azoreans to come to Canada that year (actualy
only 18).
That same year 102 men left Madeira on the S.S. Hellas on 26 May 1953 and
arrived in Halifax on 1 Jun 1953.
Acording to Portuguese records, these are the only sanctioned immigrants
(179) to arrive in Canada in 1953. The Canadian records are apparently quite
diferent (555) and at the time the book was published it wasn't known why
the diferent numbers.
I have never heard of a passenger list for those sailings.
In 1954 approximately 1000 men came from the Azores in two sailings in the
Homelad. One with 400 on 23 Mar and the other with 600 in 23 Apr. The
Canadian records say 1320.
By the way, hello from North Vancouver.

Hello Manny
I also have that book. It seems that I may have started something which I
don't know where it is taken me.
OK, I have had that picture for a long time and have wondered who the heck
the people in it are. I can indentify a few (too few!) Butv I am starting to
get the bug to pursue them all. Dificult task, probaly beacuse I have been
away from the portuguese community since soon after I married and also
because quite a few of those in the picture are no longer with us.
May I ask you who your dad is and where he came from and where in the photo
he is?
If you care to share that with me you can contact me privately or as you
wish.
My uncle was the original imigrant who then sponsored my family. We have
been in Canada since 1957.
Just as a bit of a side bar I too have Furtados (Furtado de Mendonca) in my
family, as recent as my grandmother.
Many thanks for your posting and hope to hear from you.
Hermano

I have Furtados in Manitoba, Toronto, Montreal. Recently my cousin passed
away, Jose Furtado at age 83. I sent information a few months back about a
cousin in Lisbon who wrote a book on the biography of Jose Furtado. There
were quite a few pictures in the book of groups of people he was friends
with and played soccer with. He spoke of how he immigrated to Canada from
Sao Miguel. My aunt now has that book. It was in Portuguese and I couldn't
read and understand most it, but he did say how he went from Sao Miguel to
Canada. I will find that out.

Can we be related?

Hello Hermano
I'm not quite sure where my dad is in the photo dad told me a couple years

remember dad is 83 his name is Jose Furtado he is from Covoada S. Miguel.

My brother Mario was born in Riberia Grande in 1948, I was born in USA in
1952. My father came here (by his sponsor Margarida Mederios) in 1949 then
my mother followed in 1950.

My father who's 82 can't remember because of his poor health the name of the
town Covoada. His uncle is Jose Furtado who could have moved to ?Covoda.
There was Joaquim, Marianna, Jose, Antonio (my grandfather) and Amelia.
Joaquim m. ? came to this country in the early 1900's and had three
children; Manuel, Arthur and Mary. Marianna m. Antonio de Sousa stayed in
Sao Miguel and had one daughter, Encarnacao who came here with my
grandfather in 1920. My grandfather, Antonio m. Maria de Resurreicao de
Sousa in 1919 went back to Sao Miguel in 1931 and he died there in 1945;
Jose m. Ambrozina Paula and stayed in Sao Miguel. They had three children;
Maria de Carmo, Isabel, Jose who went to Canada m. Laura Teixeira. They had
eight children. Amelia m. ? Morais went to California and supposedly had no
children.

I've been trying to figure out the Morgados that is part of the Furtados
that my father said we have on our line. There is a Manoel Furtado Morgado
b. 1830 m. Carlotta Julia 1853. Then there is another Manuel Furtado
Morgado b. 1814 m. Luzia Rosa who died and then m. Maria Julia Ponte 1867.
According to this group, I'm hearing Morgado means the eldest or who
inherits? I'm not sure that this is a name or nickname.

Anyway, maybe we are connected through a female line?

I also have Furtado from covoada and arrifes that I am looking into.  My grandma who is Maria Teresa Furtado born 1916 and Grandpa Jose Pedro Medeiros born same year have both passed along with my Dad so it's a little hard getting information so  I am asking relatives in Toronto who may know more about them and there ancestors.  I will forward those names you mentioned and ask if they ring a bell since it sounds like it's right around the same years and area I am researching.

Hermano: you said you were born in arrifes 52? my mom was born in arrifes 1950 (Aldina Maria martins Vivieros) family of Gil Carreiro Viveiros and Maria asencao martins and my Dad (Gilberto Pedro medeiros) also born in arrifes 1945 family of maria teresa furtado and Jose pedro Medeiros
My mother had 7 brothers 7 sisters your bound to have known one of them.

Debbie,

It was Manny Furtado not Hermano who has the family from Covoada and was born in 1952 in Arrifes.  I have Jose Furtados in my lines, but not sure if the family moved to Arrifes or Covoada.  I do have Mederios along the lines, but from Riberia Grande as my Furtados.  Like I told Manny I think there could be connections, but he doesn’t have knowledge of his history.

I have a cousin married to a Martin and they moved to Toronto in the lates 70’s.  I’m not sure where he was originally from.  It may have been from Ponta Delgada.  His name is Francisco Martin and I know he has one brother who is a doctor and I think still lives in Lisboa.

Not sure Hermano, but my recollection is that photo should be flipped over
so that left is right and right is left. I haven't seen it for a while.

The very young gentleman kneeling and holding his hat, I believe, is my
uncle. Since he is still living, I will send you his name in private. Ever
the adventurous one, a prankster, and courageous, to have come to a new
country willing to brave the hardships and the unknown. He sponsored many
people. He went on to emigrate to the US and is doing well in California.
People don't like to talk about what they faced, because they are expected
to be grateful to the new country that has invited them in, but the reality
is that new immigrants faced many hardships and discrimination.

From my point of view, whether in the US or Canada, people are better off to
learn and acknowledge their real history, come to terms with what really
happened, and hopefully move forward to a better society so that such
discrimination does not repeat itself. Moreover, our ancestors were not as
illiterate as many people believe, see below:

*From "Portuguese Immigrants. 25 Years in Canada," by Domingos
Marques and Joao Medeiros (Toronto: Marquis Printers, 1980).

The first Portuguese Consul in Toronto was Dr. Armando Nunes de Freitas.
Marcelino Moniz, Vice-Consul, writes:

"When I came to work in the Consulate at the end of 1956 there were
literally piles of immigrants' letters for me to attend to. My first job was
to sort them out and reply to all this correspondence. Portuguese were
writing from all regions of Ontario, complaining about working conditions,
asking for information etc., etc. Many were concerned with sponsorship of
their relatives and consular protection."

This is so cool. I printed it out on my photo paper and showing my dad. I
hope he can recognize some of the people. It will be hard since he is 82
now and not that healthy. My uncle left in the early 50's he will probably
know more. Everyone I knew flew over during that time frame. I will find
out for sure.

Hello Linda
If he recognizes any of the people please let me know.
There is another one which looks a lot like it taken in the same setting the
difference being the angle at which the picture was taken and I think that
it may have been taken the following month.
Anyway I am glad that you enjoy it so.

Hello again John
OOps, sorry I got to the other posting first.
I believe that the picture is oriented right the only difference is that it
has been taken from a somewhat different vantage point because the tree
branches on the left side of the photo are hiding some of the people on the
steps there.
Another difference may be that one was taken in March and the other in
April.
As for the last part of yuor posting, you couldn't have been any more
correct because I myself prepared quite a few of those people to qualify for
the minimum level of literacy need at the time and I can vouch for the fact
that some of them execelled way past that level, and that was accomplished
at night school after working sun up to sun down which was the norm in the
50's.
Teaching those "illiterate" taught me one heck of a lesson, that I have
carried with me for the last 50 plus years, and that is how fortunate I was
that my parents made the sacrifices they did so that I could continue my
education. In the majority of cases that's the only thing those bright and
hard working young men lacked, opportunity, and not only the opportunity,
but also the ecouragement mostly because their aid was needed to feed their
families. I have nothing but admiration for most of them.
As for the harships and descrimination, those have been well documented and
I won't got into it!
I was one of the fortunate ones because after one year in New Bedford, as a
foreing student, in 1957 when I arrived inToronto I had a usefull level of
education and a fairly good command of English which in the most part they
didn't, adding to their woes.
Having said all that, after I got married for reasons I won't go into, I
sort of sort of strayed from the Portuguese community and so haven't
contribute to it at the level I probably was capable of.
Holy cow, you got me started on one of my soap box issues. Enough of that!

I'm looking at the ship Olympia in 1956, am wondering if there is any place where I could get a passenger identified.
Helping a friend find the family father who came from Pico, Azores, probably Madelina.
They are traveling to the Azores in the fall and we are trying to find the parish where birth records, baptismal records etc
maybe kept. Unfortunately do not know the parish.
Any suggestions.
